I got my kit last week. Looks great. Will be a while before I install since will put on my son's 300D when he returns, since he can't deal with a bad compressor at school. I did get a Sanden with rear ports that look like the R4's, but unlikely I will luck out and they bolt up directly.

NO. Hose mods required. Even if a Sanden with the GM "pad back" connection was used, it will not line up with the MB factory R4 hose assembly.

Has anybody solved the hose issue yet?

I have been planning since I will have a short window to install the Sanden on my son's 300D when he returns from university. I can use up the R4's on my 300D, since unlike him I can deal with failures.

I show a Sanden 4616 I got on ebay cheap. It has the "GV" head - 6 bolt w/ "GM Pad". Unlucky me, since suction is on the left, opposite the R4 next to it (seized). Otherwise, the 300D's fitting might bolt up, depending on exactly where the Sanden sits. And no, I cannot rotate the Sanden to match since they require the drain port be installed only up to 90 deg from top (they do have some w/ vertical pads, so maybe rotate that?). Apparently, R4's suck in the center and Sanden's discharge in the center. I show the R4 installed since I couldn't find a single photo on-line that shows the tube connections . The lower hose is discharge.

The Sanden "Q" head has the GM pad with proper orientation of suction and discharge (don't have, $25 ebay), but is much closer to the engine so the tubes might bump things. It fits a 5 bolt Sanden (have). Another problem is that the port is ~2" aft of the R4 and hoses don't stretch. I know Rollguy has a bunch of Sanden heads, so if there was a simple bolt-up method he would have found it.

I read that Klima's Sanden retro-fit ($$$) comes with a new discharge hose to the filter, eliminating the circuitous route of the factory one. They have an adapter that bolts to the existing suction hose.

I will likely have to fab new hoses too. If so, I am thinking of cutting the crimps and running new rubber from the factory tubes to the compressor. I have a crimper that should work if the factory hoses are standard U.S. size. One compressor fitting that might work is the swivel adapter shown (to O-ring fittings, $25 ebay). My GV head is used in Sanden's FLX 7 series, which has many adapters (head + swivel $45 ebay). BTW, I will drain the PAG oil since I plan to use butane which is compatible with the mineral oil in the system now.

The best fittings/head to use are O ring type, as the fittings are available and most common on the Sanden compressors. As far as the hoses, I may make an adapter fitting for use with the factory D hose that fits on the stock hose fitting (#10?) to the (#8?) fitting on the compressor (I will try to get a photo). I have not used the factory S hose routing, but just made a hose to go over the top of the engine from the condenser to the compressor. I am sure the factory hoses are metric, and not compatible with SAE size hose/fittings. I usually have my A/C guy weld a barb on the end of the factory hard line, and crimp on new hose from there....Rich

From my experience, I would advise clamping the compressor discharge hose firmly to the radiator core support as MB did in the original design. Otherwise, the vibration of the diesel engine will be absorbed by the condenser which will fail shortly. The copper to aluminum tubing joint is fragile and cannot absorb the vibration of an unsupported hose.

Also, The Sanden does not rely on its lubricant to be suspended in the freon like the old R4 does. That suspended oil of the R4 coats the walls of the condenser and evaporator adding an insulation barrier. I can see the Sanden compressor offering slightly better cooling as a result of having less suspended oil.

I have a great W201 that just needs a new compressor. I believe it used the old R4 on the 2.2l diesel. I'd like to know if this bracket would fit and what recommendations the group has for a compressor, Sanden or other. Thanks!l

This thread is old, and the want list was for the first batch of the second generation bracket kit. I am currently on the third batch (50 kits) and the fourth revision (I guess I could call it Gen 2.4). No more lists need to be made, as I have plenty kits to meet the demand.....Rich

I used to have a 190D 2.2 and I think it had the Denso compressor. The Denso compressor is the same basic design as the Sanden (wobble plate axial piston). My kit is made only for an OM617/616....Rich
