What is this linkage for ?

1991 350 SDL 602 eng. As I was installing shocks I noticed this linkage that appears to be coming from the wastegate controller?(black item in the one pic) The linkage will not reach the pivot arm that its suppose to attach to. Can someone educate me on this lever and linkage, and it purpose in life. I assume it has been this way since I purchased the car.

Turbo boost dump. If the boost exceeds about 13 psi it opens a valve and vents the boost back into the exhaust system. Prevents overboosting the engine; there's also an overboost protection solenoid in the intake manifold that closes the connection between the manifold and the ALDA so that the extra fuel given under boost is cut off.

So it being unhooked was more than likely done intentionally by the PO. And it cannot effect performance? right
|
Correct. OTOH, if your overboost protection solenoid also fails, the engine could blow up. That would affect performance.

If you ever get into a runaway diesel situation you're screwed without the dump.

I'm a bit confused... you say this is a 602 motor not a 603? That's the wastegate... with the arm unhooked like that I would think the wastegate would be "flopping in the wind" and you wouldn't make any boost.

The accordion section and trap replacement pipe make this a 603.96 or .970. 602 doesn't have either. .970 is consistent with a '91 350SDL.
