W123 Driveshaft won't fit.

Putting driveshaft back in W123 240D. Rear is fully telescoped over front spline (checked via hammer) and the assembly is millimeters too long to go back in over rear flex disc.

The front flex disc is warped about 5 mm, now that all bolts are tightened up. Is something flipped over wrong?

How are your motor mounts? I was just thinking that they could have moved...

...how's the angle on the dangle of the transmission?

What's the other end at the differential like? Is that drooping?

I wouldn't go checking too much with that hammer.

If you can't see what's going on with the geometry of it all try making some quick and dirty meaurements with a tape measure - the drive shaft should be (approximately) parallel to the underside.

Is the transmission mount installed? Center support bolted up tight? Something sounds misaligned.

Motor's in tight, I might loosen up the T mount and see if that gives it some slack, let the center support float as well. Diff is in tight. I don't know if there's any float in that assembly. IIRC it's bolted on w/ 2 bolts through the trunk floor.

Same problem whether or not I let the tranny sag.

I bet I'm bolted up wrong to the front flex disc I was looking and thinking it shouldn't be wavy like that. I'll pull stuff apart and get the flex disc properly on the tranny output flange and work it back from there. May get me the few millimeters I'm looking from.

Anyway you can post a pic of the flex disc and the driveshaft center support. Did you loosen the large nut on the driveshaft and "shorten" it to allow replacement of the disc?

If the flex disc appears warped, I would suspect that one of the shoulders is not seated in the counterbore in the drive hub.

No luv playing with flex discs. Think it will be easiest to unbolt the differential mount, get it over and put it all back together.

In case there's no issue with the flex-disc installation or telescopic driveshaft coupling, have you tried to unbolt the driveshaft center mount from the tunnel and let it come down enough to get both driveshaft ends properly seated in the pilot bushings & flex-discs, before refastening the center mount?

Happy Motoring, Mark

Wives like to solve problems by sending Money and letting someone else do the Job.
There is that Sentence "Why don't you just...."

Back in the 80s I had a Girl Friend who used to get impatient when I worked on Her Car.
I talked Her into doing an Oil Change saying it was one of the simplest jobs on Her Car. She jerked on the Wrench and it slipped off and She hit Her Elbow on something under the Car.
Of course that finished Her and She would not complete the job.
I reminded Her again that this was a simple Job.

After that She never rushed Me on a Job again.

When I got Married I got my Wife to do a few things on the Car and She does not bother Me either.

How is the car supported? Or is it on the ground?

If the car is on jack stands, have you tried jacking the rear sub frame up and down for better alignment?

Either way... removing the rear diff. mount may be enough. Be sure diff. is well supported before removal.

If that doesn't get you enough room, then loosening the 4 bolts that secure the diff. to the sub-frame is another option. Not that big of a deal. Just a little time consuming.

I had the rubber boot, where the two shafts come together, be enough extra to make mine not slip right on.

Car on good stands and a jack under the diff. Undo four bolts that support the diff to the frame, lower the diff around 6" The drive shaft will just slip in place. No pry-bar, no dirty words, no sweat.

That was the plan. The diff actually has two more studs nutted to the subframe from the top. Can barely get in there w/ the driveshaft out, much less in.

I undid the T mount at the cradle, loosened the motor mounts & pulled on the motor good & hard at the manifold and driver side motor mount, got my 1/4".

Got everything put back together and the motor ran for 1 second then stopped. Hope it's just air in the injectors.

^^^ I've ran into this problem a couple of times while dropping w123 transmissions. Either I diff came out or I loosened up the engine and trans mount and pulled the motor forward to get clearance.
