Rebuilding the front end was already on my short list of what I was going to take on next. It just got bumped to the top.

what's crazy is all the tie rods are supposedly new, but they are ALL destroyed... one ball joint boot is destroyed, the guide rod is destroyed, the bushing looks destroyed, such a shame a 240 aluminum rim got destroyed... I think a simple whack with a mallet will fix the guide rod brace/bracket... time to order some parts Jay... start typing that list to Phil!!!

What I think is impressive is that your car is so rust-free that it bent the guide rod instead of tearing out the mounts.

I have decided to sell this vehicle, please pm if interested. It is currently located at vstech's place aka mercedes heaven.

It has a good strong OM616 and auto trans. I've done a lot of work but it was getting too much time and cost wise for the value of the car.

It's got some rust and it needs more love that I am willing or able to put into it with my work schedule and inability to do major work at my home.

I bought a 1987 300TD from mbselect, so I am now in the wagon club too. Pics and postup to follow, I take possession tomorrow...

yes, the vehicle is in amazing shape. the only rust in the car is from the trunk leak. it looks like there was an antenna seal leak, letting water collect in the well, and get to the driver's side pinch weld on the floor pan...
this would certainly be an excellent candidate for restoration.

Honestly;...What is truly amazing, and quite a miracle, is that a 240D Automatic got going Fast enough to do this kind of damage.......
Stranger things have happened.....but this is baffling.....

It had just lightly rained for a couple minutes and stopped. The asphalt road was very slick due to the oil rising to the top with the slight rain and no more behind it to wash it off.

He was coming off the main road (limit 45, he says he was doing somewhat less due to the rain) and began to make the right turn coming into our development. He understeered, he says he turned the wheel but the car kept going straight. He hit the 4" concrete median curb at a 45 degree angle. The median had a flower bed in it so the only casualty besides the car was a half dozen pansies.

Car does not have ABS, I suspect he may have locked the front wheels when applying the brakes to make his turn. I think the slick asphalt caught him by surprise.

He did the Richard Petty teen skid pad course at CMS last fall, he remembered what to do, let off the brakes, but just ran out of road to get it straightened out again before hitting the curb.

What is important is that no one is hurt, the car can hopefully be fixed, and my kids are safe.
I did something similar in my old 190c fintail in 1974.

On a fresh snow I was making a turn in the parking lot where I worked. As I turned I decided I might be going too fast and put on the brakes locking them and slid over the rolled curb. (If I had not panicked I might well have made the turn if I had not put on the brakes!)

The car came to rest on its subframe. I got a co-worker with a 4wd suburban to pull me off IIRC. No damage done.
