My New Acquisition: 1987 300TDT

Just picked up a 1987 300TD for $700. The car has about 270,000 miles, but the replacement 603 engine has only about 100,000 miles (and has #17 head). Looks like it's smoke silver on tan. Interior is nice except for the front seats and missing sunroof liner; paint is decent but lots of scratches on roof; very minor rust spots (chips in paint) here and there.

Windows work except driver's rear, which is stuck up. AC doesn't work. Coolant temp sensor doesn't work. Other than that, everything seems operational.

The PO completely mangled the vacuum plumbing, so I have to get that figured out. And the accelerator cable has come loose so I have to fix that. Then I can drive it and see what I'm dealing with. I'm told it drives fine....we'll see.

Anyway, looks like various repairs that are a good match for my limited capabilities. Should keep me entertained for a few months and I'll learn some things in the process.

Window Regulator, AC Compressor, Temp Sender maybe or Coolant sensor. Sounds like a good deal. I'd flush those fluids since you don't know when they were changed. Also yes, let's see some pictures.

Yes....since I got it cheap, I'm emboldened to experiment, try things I'd otherwise be afraid to.

Oh, I won't....my goal is to fix what I can fix, leave other stuff alone, live with it for a while, then sell it someone who really appreciates these.

Leather or tex?

Does the engine have its serial number on the block spur that hosts the IP or is there a tag on the starboard aft end of the block?

Reman engines don't have the SN stamped on the block, they have a plate riveted to the bellhousing like the 2nd picture.

MB remans. I don't know how a Metric Motors rebuild is identified. Charmalu should know.

[sour grapes] Too many sellers claim a rebuilt engine when they spend for a head gasket replacement. [/sour grapes]

Actually if he did that then he would have a place for the generator to run the window AC unit killing 2 birds with one stone.

My understanding is that it's a REPLACEMENT engine, not a reman.; there were 100k miles on the replacement engine when it was installed. All I know for certain, of course, is that it has a #17 head.

Yes, I understand. My courage as a mechanic increases inversely proportional to the amount of cash I have tied up in my subject.
