w126 shudder when coming to a stop

Hi Guys,

Hoping that someone has seen this before. I have a 91 350sdl, 200k miles.

When coming to a stop, say the last 35 mph, I get a shudder that gets much worse as I come to a stop. I have tried putting in neutral to rule out a trans issue, but there was no change. I also have a slight vibration on the highway - i know that my wheels are balanced. The tires are newish.

I know with brake discs I should have a vibration when braking on the highway, but there is none.

Has anyone seen this before?

Get the same...

vibration in my 90 350SDL.

I have a bad upper and lower ball joint.

They're on order and "should" solve my problem.

... guide rod bushing/mount, in the body of the car attached to the guide rod on each side. most noticeable if at low speeds, you apply and release the brakes, you will feel a solid clunking from them. they are fairly simple to change with no special tools needed.

that's a little more in depth than is needed to JUST change the bushing... but yes that's it.
he actually pulled the entire guide rod, bushing and body mount, and changed the body mount bushing as well in this DIY...
all you need to do if it's just the guide rod bushing is loosen the bolts holding it to the body, and unscrew it from the rod, then screw it back onto the rod, and bolt it back into the body.

A common problem with the W126.

John, me thinks you gave the simplified no-pita description. I had to remove the mounts, press the old out, press new in, rig a safe method to pull the arm forward. Yes, unbolt & re-bolt but more effort required than it sounds.

yeah, it's involved, but a press is not required, nor is a spring compressor. and you have to put it back together in the right order, or you'll be doing it twice. a set of longer bolts to pull everything back together is needed too.

oh, and all this about the GRM's could be unnecessary if yours don't clunk when you tap the brakes... you could have warped rotors...

I have always had more vibration with slightly warped rotors at low speeds also. My 300SD used to shudder when slowing down when it would downshift the trans while coming to a stop. Replacing the vac modulator made it go away.

Can you expand on the doing it twice comment?

After a 1500 mile road trip in my 350sd, I think mine are due. And the two other bushings on the bearing holder also seem to be shot.

What can be done out of order that would result in doing the job again?

Thanks!
