300D

Hi,

EBAY LINK

Well I don't need another car BUT I have been trying for years to find a Thistle Green 300D... Looking at the pics do you have any concerns/questions I should ask? One I noticed right away was the anti-freeze bottle - looks like mud is in there - what the heck... After I get some feedback from this forum, I will contact the guy and if I like what I hear might just have to fly out there (have a ton of FF miles...) and check it out/work a deal if he will let me....

As always thanks!

Until you find out what is up with that antifreeze, is there much else to ask ?

Looks downright rude....

My '83 had mud in the cooling system when I bought it. Repeated flushing cleaned it out and the car still works fine 7 years later. That's a nice looking car, that's most of the battle. Mechanical problems are easy to fix.

Looks like it has a Dash Cap on it. look close. looks like a line along the edge above the center vents etc...

I agree with anti freeze, and the the Expantion tank sure is yellow.

Eng bay is scroungy for a low milage vehicle. look at the paint on the inner fenders and firewall.

Notice the the low level of dirty black brake fluid.

Probably wants $15K for it.

How does mud get into the cooling sysytem?

I really have to strain to see the level in my expansion tank. We have Zerex G-05 in ours so it is almost clear. Maybe the green coolant looks like that darker stuff in the expansion tank in the e-bay car.........or maybe it is oil in there???

Expansion tank looks to be slightly overfilled?

Look close, the coolant level is high in the front and lower in the rear.
probably on a slope.

Doesn`t mention if he is the original owner. probably a flipper.

If that is a dash cap, it's a hell of a lot better quality than the one our '79 came with. I'd have one if I knew it was a cap.

A dealer or flipper I also think. Look at his feedback. This car will probably go pretty high. Ask questions like if the paint is original or a respray.

Technically you should fly out before the auctions end or have someone there really check the car out before the final bidding. There were a few somewhat unscrupulous mercedes sellers in the maryland area some time ago.

It could also be everything they claim it is. Still it is up to the buyer to establish that. The steering wheel looks about as it should at that claimed milage.I feel it takes someone with fair knowledge of the make to photograph it and include it in the ad. Someone though it might go for fourteen thousand.

He might do a buy it now at about ten before the auction ends is a guess. If you got an agreement going you could fly out and evaluate the car as part of the deal before paying. I believe that is a platic dash cap as well. Installed well though. There are no stone chips at all above the bumper. Although there is a small item just below the front signal light. If resprayed it probably was not reciently. At 100k usually there are a few. Not always though.

There is a second line just to the right of the glove box and tracking across the dash that I think is not factory either.Could be wrong as always though. Doubtful the poster will find a better one in his color prefference though. Depends on how deep his pockets are as well.

Yeah, engine compartment is not clean enough to eat off of for sure. Dingy brown expansion tank and some oily residue on the master cylinder reservoir were my first thoughts.

Interior condition looks pretty good and exterior doesn't displease me in the least.

Not a dash cap.
steering wheel looks GREAT, mileage should be accurate.
mud in coolant tank could be simply an original tank, that's yellowed, with green coolant in the bottle, and the entire engine bay is coated in oily mist...

John, the steering wheel is turned 180deg. you are seeing the bottom side in the close up pic.

Look at the left vent area, you can see the difference. I vote "Dash Cap".

Sure looks like a dash cap in that picture. Look at the line above the center vent.
