300SDL determineing starting issue

Hello All,
I have been combing the post to see if I could find a definitive answer to my problem but I am still stuck between 2 possible options.
Here is my issue:
On occasion the car will not start
Key turns to 1st position and light come on
Turn key to start and no response
I have seen recommendations for just the ignition switch, just replace the tumbler, and replace both.
Battery new. Starter is a year old.
There has been times where I turned the car off and put the car in drive and then back to park and the car would start.....Not sure how or if there is a connection. Your time and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
A

The Neutral Safety Switch is faulty. It is attached to the tranny. Try to start in neutral the next time it happens, or shift around the gears and ends in neutral or park. It is a medium to low difficulties DIY.

x2 but first check the shift rod bushings. Worn or missing shift rod bushings messes the alignment of the shift gate and the NSS.

Working on a 126 tranny is as easy as it gets. If you're like and never did a bench press in your life, you can do the job without lifting the car.

Thanks for the tips Gents. Sixto, where is the shift rod bushing located? Is it part of the shifter?

Cheers,
A
