W116 Seats:

Just curious to ask if anyone has adapted later, more comfortable seats into a W116????

My issues is, of course, the 34 year old seats have lost most, if not all their support and the average estimate to re-do all (3) seats is $1500.00 to $1800.00 and I really can't see investing that in this old relic.

Suggestions????

I know the 126/123 seat bottoms will work in either body. (spring box) I installed a spring box from a 90 SEL into a 82 240D, just had to change the seat tracks. pads, MB Tex fit right on. the later 126`s have coil springs in the corners with a stiff/desce piece of rubber inside the coil, and a additional cross spring in the front.

I don`t know if this will fit into the w116 body. a W126 seat with electric will run around $50, i just bought a W123 seat yesterday with manual levers for $38 plus tax and the other stuff added.

I have seen some nice W126 in the yards now and then.

If you are looking for W126 seats I'd suggest getting ones from an 89+ car, with the late interior (diagonal pleats on the door cards).

I think there are a number of front seats I could retro into the W116, but the rear seat may be proprietary.

Next time you are in the yards and run across a 116, pull the seat and swap in a 126 rear seat to see how they line up. I doubt they will fit, different bodies, but you never know.

The 126 SEL/SDL will have the electric rear seats so those won`t work.

Dave at the old Atlanta-Stuttgart Auto Parts used to retrofit w126 power seats into w116s for customers (he said the biggest challenge was where to install the control box). He gave the impression it was a direct bolt-in proposition. However, when I checked it out on my '79 using seats from an '83 SD, I did not see how they would bolt in at the front. I did not pursue it.

As I said on the other w116 seats thread, my '79 came to me with late w123 seats, which were great. I later stumbled on some hardly used w116 seats from a little old lady car and put them in instead, and regretted it in everything except the fact I had front seats that matched the rear seat. The late w123 seats are far more comfortable on long drives. I even find the early w123 seats better than the w116. I am 6 ft 4 ins with a bad back so this stuff matters to me.

When I met the guy who put the w123 seats in (the P-PO), he indicated that he just bolted them in directly. That is all I can tell you.

In terms of w126 seats, the power adjustments are great, but if the seat pad has deteriorated no amount of adjustment will make them comfortable. For some reason, every w126 I have ever test driven, owned or parted had badly deteriorated front seat pads (or a jury-rigged substitute like carpet underpad). Whereas all the w123 seats I have come across have at least been tolerable. Possibly that is just some fluke with the cars I have encountered, I don't know.

It is possible to find a decent spring box and cover from the passenger side in a wrecking yard. Whenever I go 'yardi'n, I always look for them, and purchase them whenever possible.
