hitch02 bought it from the board, he said there were some things with it that the seller did not disclose so he did not buy it.

Not necessarily a bad car, but not what I was expecting per my conversations with the seller. Anybody who is truly interested in this car is welcome to e-mail me offline for more info at hitch02@myrealbox.com.

In other news, my wife went and bought an Accord wagon.

Hmph.

I originally clicked the "Buy it now" price at $5500. Compared to what I've seen around here, that was a fair deal (I thought) after speaking with the seller. I don't think it is worth that now.

There was a *gorgeous* sounding '84 300TDT in the Washington Post this past weekend, Lapis blue on palomino, 150K, garaged with records. Didn't go look because it was too late by then. As I recall, seller was asking $7500/obo.

I am hearing more horror stories about undisclosed flaws, deceptions and outright fraud relating to vehicles, parts and accessories being marketed through eBay every week. I now look at it for amusement only. I wonder if there is National (and International) Consumer Protection Legislation with some teeth in it that can be used to force truthfullness and complete honest disclosure? One state's Consumer Protection laws might protect people from that particular state, but what about inter-state or international transactions?

I bought my '87 300D on Ebay and have been very pleased with the car. That said, I only bought it after several conversations with the dealer seller who responded promptly to all my questions and was very highly rated. I told the seller I was very interested in the car and was prepared to pay a fair price but needed to know it was the right car and worth the money. I also had someone local check out the car and bought with the expectation that I would need to budget some $$ to bring the car up to my "real" expectations. Yes I found a few things that needed doing that I didn't know about but it was all minor stuff. Ebay can be really useful if you do your homework but if you are buying blind you are out of your mind, especially if the seller is not very highly rated. I paid a fair to high price for my car but I also have a great car I'll keep for 10 years. I think the people who tend to get burned are the ones who are hoping to "steal" a car in a hurry before anyone else and discover that they really only got what they paid for, or less. Just my thoughts.

Regarding the credibility of people selling over ebay, our little club of guys up here in Michigan is 3 for 4. Three great experiences and one horrible one. The coolest deal was buying a MB from one of our own on the forum. That leant awesome credibility.

If you want to see the type of deceptive "looking for a sucker" marketing that people use eBay for, check out the $18,000.00 1982 300D that some dreamer is advertising. More info & the thread connecting the forum to the eBay ad can be seen on the posts "Is this guy on drugs?" that is posted on this forum.

This might say more about me than I want to share, but why should the government intervene? If you buy a car car without inspecting it then you get what you deserve. It will be very difficult to set legal standards around what "excellent condition" means. All it will do is change the language used in marketing. The US FDA said that food manufacturers have to conform to certain standards to advertise their products as Light or Lite. So they changed the labels to say Right or Rite. What did that accomplish?

The internet opened up advertising for all the world to see. Autotrader.com does the same thing as ebay without the bidding feature. Should you trust an Autotrader ad any more or less than an ebay ad? For that matter, if I pick up a Nashville newspaper in San Jose should the government protect me because I purchased a car I saw in an ad that turned out to be junk?

ebay didn't decrease the quality of cars or the increase the level of deceipt practiced by many sellers. It just gave more wishful thinkers access to more wishful thoughts.

Off my soapbox now.

All valid points, Sixto. You think you have beaurocracy in the US of A; come up here to find out exactly how stagnant an economy can become when beaurocracy runs amok. However, I think there should be a medium to discourage deceitful people from preying on others by concealing defects, or making blatant lies. Perhaps even something as simple as reporting offenders to eBay so that they can take whatever corrective action is deemed to be in everyone's best interest. I would think that eBay would like to be viewed as credible and reliable.
