W140 300sd OPINION THREAD

i'm looking at one w/ about 200k on it hopefully for about 3 grand
i used to own a w140 300se and i'm somewhat familiar w/ the problems of that model. are there any additional issues to be wary of for the diesel version? not even sure which motors are in these; i'm guessing 6 cly but i don't think it is the 603....or is it?
any opinions would be welcome.

I'd say that it's worth $2,000 at the most ASSUMING that it doesn't consume oil.....

it should have the 603.971 motor. the rodbender. if the rods have been upgraded or the engine has been rebuilt, factory, it'll likely be a strong vehicle for years to come, if it's original, it's life is questionable. many have exceeded 200K, but many many have failed rods/pistons/etc... look for signs of oil consumption, and or burning. listen for scraping/loping from the engine at idle...

300se would be the gasser one cam motor or two cam motor, wouldn't it? I think the motors are pretty sound but a little thirsty for a six, since its geared fairly low to get the big beast off the line. I have no idea for value.

Just like with the W126, I would be weary of buying one that didn't have a factory replacement engine.

The W140 300SE has the 722.5 5-speed with first gear start and overdrive so it does far better than the W126 300SE which has 3 practical forward gears and an auxiliary stump puller.

A fellow on the local Craigslist has been trying to sell a 93 (or maybe 94, I can't recall specifically) W140 3.5 diesel claiming over 500k miles and he still drives it daily. He has been asking WAY too much but his price has been dropping. Currently I believe he is ag $4k. I think he started at $7k a year or so ago. I would assume the engine is not original.
