This seemingly solved the issue. I added quite a bit on level ground. Probably a liter of water and coolant. Enough to fill it to the bottom of the neck. Drove it about 20 miles today and came back to garage and let it idle. Temp stayed the same. Turned heat on high and the temp gauge went down!

I'm guessing air pockets were settling in the engine at idle causing the temp to rise. We will see over the next few days.

Well the good news is the adding coolant fixed the issue but the bad news is I found out WHY the engine was low on coolant.....the servo is leaking at the bottom. The servo/climate control systems works exactly as it should and considering I don't drive this car in the winter I'm weighing my options. Once I park it for the winter I'll probably do the bypass (with a vacuum valve I have from a later model at the pnp) leaving the servo in place. I guess the only issue with that would be the temp switch causing the blower to come on when heat is called for. I'll start another thread when I get around to this.

The car has the ALUMINUM servo as well which they claim is better and does not crack like the plastic.

I have a good working plastic servo if you want it.

Yes, you were correct. I acknowledged your statement as a possibility but I wasn't quite sure how to verify the level since I've never dealt with one without an expansion tank before.

Hey V-tech,
How much you want for the servo?

I REALLY don't want to bypass for heat, but this winter is going to be a doosey.
I would rather just replace the servo.

Let me know,
Ginny

I used to think the same until an unusual cooling issue I finally resolved on a Toyota.

Ultimately, the cooling system was low on coolant but I didn't realize it because the overflow tank remained at proper levels. Wasn't augmenting the cooling system due to a blockage in the hose from the overflow tank to the radiator fill. I was sure the electric fans weren't working properly as it would only heat up when running real slowly and would operate normally when crusing along at 30+ mph. Verified the fans were working as designed and was at a loss. Accidently discovered that reving the motor to 2,000 rpm's while not moving would also cool the system down. I guess the antifreeze wouldn't circulate properly at the low level when the waterpump was spinning at a slower speed?
