X1

There was a time when you could buy a good one for less than 10K, now, of course they are all worth millions. Ask anyone who bought one to flip it and has kept it a while.

I also liked the old Armstrong Siddeley cars, which were similar. Saw one on Ebay a while back that would have been a beautifyl dream to redo, but I didn't have the space (I say that as I prepare to get rid of several more cars, plus I have a potential deal to buy 55 MBs and Citroens from a storage facility in Montana, and move them to my business partner's location, if we can float this. he has the cash but not the health).

whunter repair RRs periodically, maybe he can help you.

Also, when the ATs were imported to Stutgart, they were taken apart and "tweaked" to make certain they worked properly.

The Germans had no AT at the time and the treaties after the war forbade them to make V-8 engines or car engines with gearter displacement than 3.0 litres. That's why there were so many 300 cars in the late 50s and so much work on the W189 engine!

However that's a little different from what the Finance weenies and the bonus-hungry salopards of the current car companies' management are doing. DB had no choice but to obey the Allies until 1965, then they had total free reign over their own destiny...

Don't forget GM air conditioning compressors in W123 and W126 until they changed to Denso. Weren't the first ACC units in the W116 a Chrysler unit?
All of the manufacturers have been using globally sourced parts for years. You would not believe how many Czech parts on my son's 2000 BMW 328i!

Here is one of my lengthy projects at the shop. This 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II came to us in need of a lot of care and attention. The car had been repainted along the way, but the bodywork was horrific to say the least. Every panel on the car had to be smoothed and shrunken to restore flatness.

A previous owner added ugly, incorrect fog lamps up front and butchered the front bumper filler panels. These had to be welded up and refinished. The rear bumper filler panel was also badly damaged and had much of the original body lines from the stamping were lost.

I had to restore the body lines with a set of steel drifts and 1/8" steel rod had to be brazed to the back of the edge roll to strengthen the part and minimize the amount of filler used.

The twin carburetors were horribly out of sync and the engine needed a complete and extensive tuning session.

The final photo shows the car as it is being offered for sale...

Here is another Rolls that I recently received for minor service. Quite a lot has changed in 46 years. The car has a lot of neat little details. The RR logo in the center caps is weighted and floats in a fluid, so the RR is always visible as the car is moving, because the weight keeps the logo from rotating...

I have seen the logo in the wheels in action. Neat but hokey to me. Beautiful car though. Loved the umbrella.

I wonder, on the venerable old W123 Benz's, how many parts came from outside Germany, or from outside Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plants for that matter (thinking of Becker radios, VDO gauges, and tires obviously)? Phrased differently, when did M-B start outsourcing some of the components of its cars, to satisfy the almighty accountants?...
Before Jurgen Schremp, 90% of what went into a Mercedes-Benz either came from Daimler-Benz AG or a subsidiary. With Schremp in charge costs had to be cut and so more parts were outsourced causing Mercedes to have less control over quality and of course we all know the nosedive that Mercedes quality took at that time.

If you look at the sticker on a new Mercedes it says usually "75% German content", however that doesn't mean made in Germany it just means German COMPANIES not German made. I've heard that less than 65% of a Mercedes is really made in Germany.

I told a German friend of mine a few years back that I was contemplating buying a new Mercedes but I wanted one made in Germany by Germans (the local dealer had about 20 C classes but all were made in either Brazil or South Africa). He replied, "Then you need buy a time machine because Germans haven't built Mercedes since the 60's. They are all Gastarbeiter (Guest workers)".

this, exactly. funny how many are oblivious to this fact, protesting the loss of domestic manufacturing jobs, while simultaneously spending their entire pay check on china-made goods at wal mart, "because it's cheaper".
