Which pole on the sender goes to the temp gauge?
I have a 1987 300TD with a replacement engine from....I don't know what. But on the replacement engine, at the second core hole is a two-pole temp sender 008-542-56-17. From what I understand, this is from later models where one pole goes to the temp gauge and one pole goes to the afterglow relay. But, in my car, there's only a single pole lead, the one that goes to the temp gauge.
Rather than install a one-pole sender, I think I'll just connect the lead to one of the poles. Does it matter which pole? And, if so, which one is for the temp gauge?

can you take a picture of the sender?
I have an extra sender from my recently sold car that I changed due to a bad block ground... sender is fine.

The W126 ETM says pin 1 is for the gauge and pin 2 is for the glow relay. Reference this picture (look familiar?) -
Pin 1 is on the right, pin 2 is on the left, the plastic connector indexing pin is below. Let us know how that works. This might be the last time I can help anyone this way until I twist my own arm and get reading glasses. I'm still crosseyed from looking so closely at the sender to see the pin numbers. You're doing well to last this long without reading glasses....I have 5 or 6 pairs stashed various places. I just need to come up with some makeshift way to get connectivity and then will report back....

We....have....CONNECTIVITY! Works perfectly. Now I just need to find a wire to connect permanently the lead to pole 1 of the sender.
Nice work, Sixto.

Not only that, you can upgrade to the full benefit of an afterglow relay.
As Dave said, you can use the connector housing from the 2-pin side of the 3-pin temp switch on the upper radiator hose fitting. A windshield washer pump motor might use the same connector housing. Sixto 87 300D |
