Why no louver for the 87 300D?
Does any body knows why MB didn't put a louver on the right front fender in the 87 300D W124 the 90,91,92,93,and 95 has it. The 87 190D turbo has it only the 87 300D doesn't have it

I've seen '87's with the louvres. Perhaps the fender was replaced (inadvertently) with a gasser part.

The US '87 300D/TD draws air from wheel well. The gills aren't decorative, they're actual air intakes. Other 124 Diesels actually draw air through the gills.
The SDL doesn't have them either. Euro turbos and 606s have the gills. [edit] NAs have the air intake on the other side but not through gills. Sixto 87 300D Last edited by sixto; 10-07-2012 at 09:35 PM. |

Reason why I pulled a vented fender from a '92 300D. Cannot wait to get it painted one day and mounted.

The 87' 603s draw air from the rear most point of the fender between it and the passenger door. There should be open gaps in it if you look in the hinge area.

i know they are not decorative but they look good i also have a 95 E300D and I know how they work I'm just curious why the 87 300D/TD didn't have it. I also brought a vented fender like TheDon and I can't wait to get it painted and mounted

I actually just picked up a slotted vent fender off a 95 300D last weekend at a pick & pull that I plan on putting on my 87 300TD. It looks a lot cooler IMHO.

Did you grab the intake portion that mounts to the fender?

Origins
Quote:
The air intake fender slots were introduced for the 1987 210.128 model using the OM602 turbodiesel engine. This is shown in the 1987 "Introduction into service" manual on page 186 for the OM602.961 engine and on page 253 for the 201 chassis. It appears that Mercedes used the 190D/E 201 models to try out new features (for customer acceptance?) before putting them on the larger, more expensive models that became the "E-class." Jeremy
