OM603, Pierberg vacuum pump installation question

On the 603 Pierberg replacement, You start the engine after installation and shoot 50cc of motor oil down the large opening on top then reconnect vacuum lines?? Is this correct?

I am not sure why you would do this. When I replaced the vacuum pump on my 86 300sdl, I hooked up the lines, started the car, and everything was just fine. I did not inject 50 cc of oil nor did I inject 48cc of oil.

They do recommend putting some oil in the intake port of the pump for a brand new one. On the one I did on my OM601 I used an oil can and put about 10-12 drops of 5w40 in there. Works great.

I've replaced at least one vacuum pump on a 603 engine (everyone remember Coda?) and I don't remember putting some oil in the intake port. I've never read about this recommendation before. I have a replacement vacuum pump already on the shelf for my current 87 Champagne, so I'm curious about this.

What's the purpose of the oil? To lubricate the "air" (or lack there of) valve?

... and Coda's VP is still going strong.

I did the same, turning the engine over by hand after 5 drops. I also lubricated the moving parts inside with some 15w40 prior to install.

Always happy to help a medical professional who has lost his way. Just helped one of my PhD biochemist/researcher neighbors the other day. He couldn't understand how to change a license plate. Something about the "insert screwdriver blade and rotate counterclockwise" was too much of a challenge for him.

It recommends adding a small amount of oil to the intake port after install before running the engine in the pierburg install instructions....

Don't let it bug you. Everyone is welcome for their contributions, but not everyone who knows something logs on everyday. On the bright side, you didn't get any bad advice with 56 hours.

Too bad you're bailing so quickly. I've been on this forum now for eight years. I began knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about diesels and have learned a lot over the course of time (though it's still nothing compared to a lot of the guys here). The reason I've learned what I have is because of people's willingness to bend over backwards to answer questions and explain things. I think you'd find that, with a little attention to protocol/etiquette on your part, this forum is simply an invaluable resource in understanding and maintaining your MB diesel.

Actually this is a GREAT forum. We are all enthusiasts and volunteers with hopefully some useful information concerning our cars. All of us cannot be on here 24 hours a day. We work, just like you do, and frequent when we are able.

I have gained so much information from this forum, I have learned so much. You just cannot be in a hurry. No one is paid here. We do not work here. If you are having a very serious problem with your car, and you cannot wait for a voluntary response, take it to a professional and pay them for the information and advice.

I appreciate all the sincere responses to my question. I have owned and operated my 350 SDL for 110,000 miles since the factory campaign. I have never worked on it and never plan too.
I have supported a great INDY that is not a dedicated Mercedes
guy but has worked on every diesel car or truck you can imagine for the last 30 yrs. But, regardless of my impatient response I don't get the ad hominem attack on Professionals by some of the members. Just seemed over the top to me. Opinion is too often a chaos of misinformation and prejudice You might want to discuss etiquette with some others as well.
