How I Became Doktor Bert:

Many years ago, a childhood friend started calling me 'Bert' instead of Robert and the name stuck. Many years later, I was working at a Porsche/MBZ dealer and ordered shop coats so I could go on a test drive and keep the car's clean. I ordered 'Bert' nametapes. One customer commented on how I looked like a 'Mad Scientist' or a 'Doctor' with respect to the 'lab coat' that I wore and my surgical methodology of working with motorcars.

One of my co-workers started calling me 'Doctor Bert' over the shops intercom system and the name stuck.

I gave the name the German spelling 'Doktor,' since I worked primarily on Mercedes & Porsche and have used it ever since.

Useless trivia....

There was a Mercedes mechanic named Bert here in Wisconsin who ran an early MB dealership, Bert Reimschuessel. I ended up with some OM617 valve wrenches from the Reimschuessel inventory.

I knew another Mercedes wrench in Wisconsin, Randy Durrance, who worked briefly for Bert R. ... called him "a cranky old man."

You could be in "Dilbert," since everyone is named Something-Bert.

The most accurate and best names are the ones we've earned. Sounds like you earned yours.

Here all along I thought it was possibly your playing doctor with some of the local girls when you where an adolecent. My wife is still a little mad about that period in her life as they only let her be the receptionist.
