Deposits and timing marks

In the first picture please see the deposits of white material corresponding to the cam location. The material is not magnetic, is very soft and can be remover with a thumb nail. Not the appearance or hardness of bearing babbitt. I have never seen this deposit before on this car. Using European full synthetic oil for very long time now. Change every 10kmi.
Any suggestions.

In the second picture, with the cam mark exactly centered the timing mark on the crank is a little left of center in the 01 space. how many degrees would this be.
Thanks guys, I await your learned reply.

If you have never had the Valve Cover off before it could be that who ever did the previous valve adjustment used Chalk to mark which Valves He/She adjusted.

Take a closer look at the marks on the Damper. OT is (Top Dead Center) the next mark on My Damper is 2-1/2 degrees ATDC (After Top Dead Center), 5 degrees ATDC has no number, the Next one with the Number is 10 degrees ATDC, 15 degrees ATDC just a mark and then 20 degrees ATDC and the last mark is 25 degrees ATDC.

So in the pic you are between OT and 5 degrees ATDC. So the gestimate is 1-1/2 to 2 degrees ATDC.

So, if the Camshaft timing was at OT (TDC) when the Engine was new the 1-1/2 to 2 degrees ATDC gives some indiction of the Timing Chain Stretch and Wear on the Timing Gears.
That is sort of a rough estimates of it.

However, the 2mm Method is the most accurate Metnod to determine that.

Below is a split pic showing My Marks lined up on the left and the Pointer and degree marks on the Right.

I have set the valves on this car many times and never saw these deposits, always the same oil. What could have changed? Thanks for the reply and the info on the timing.

Is there any corrosion going on in the top of the Valve Cover that might drop down on those parts. When Aluminum Corrods it often has a white powder?

Is that area near the Oil Fill Cap?

The deposits were all in line with the cams like the oil being flung of the cams was leaving the deposits on that lube oil tube. These deposits do not show anywhere else under the valve cover. The material is so soft it will turn to mush between your fingers.

Looks a bit like sludge that you can find in gas engines. The sludge is caused by water condensating in the engine after a cold start.

Perhaps air, so the oil becomes frothy. How is the oil pressure?

You can take the oil filler cap off when the engine is running to see what is happening.
