A used IP is the cheapest option by far. Sometimes at PNP, they don't know what something is and they just guess. You could always tell them it is a fuel pump on a German car and they might just charge you the going price for one. You aren't exactly lying, either.
As for injectors, I have been using Monark nozzles with success. They are still made in Germany, too. I picked up another set last week to rebuild a spare set of injectors and sell them as a rebuilt set.

To Me the Injector on the Left of the Pic is no good because it has a whole lot of Metal burned off around the Pintel. Can't tell from the Pic but I am guessing the Injector on the right does not have the drilled passage down the center of the Pintel and that it is was not made for a Turbocharged Engine; or it is a Bosio Nozzle.

Both injektors have a hole in the center. All (5) of the used ones (like the one on the left) have an equally rounded profile, as if they were made that way....

UPDATE:
Wow!
Swapped my 68,000 mile #1 injektor for one out of a sideswiped W123 from Pik-N-Pull, the one with the rounded pintle and it made an immediate difference. Not only did the idle smooth out, but the 'clanking' on #1 cylinder at idle was replaced with a more muffled, less metallic rattle....

The RIGHT nozzle has a much larger crossdrilled hole, but a smaller center hole, at only 0.15mm. MBZ states that the pintle was changed in November 1981 to incorporate a larger 0.20mm center hole

OK!
No vise here at our condo, so I found an old Hazet breaker handle, which consists of a piece of round stock with a sliding 1/2" drive head attached. I put a 6" extension on this and laid it flat on the floor, rested my knees on the breaker handle and broke the injektors loose with a 22mm wrench. After a brief cleaning and inspection, I assembled them in like fashion. Got the used injektors installed and picked up an injektor 'cackle' on #4 zylinder that wasn't there before. HOWEVER, Overall, the engine is so much smoother, both at idle and just above idle that I am shocked. The exhaust used to have a very rythmic, albeit slight 'puff-puff-puff' feel to the exhaust which is totally gone now. Additionally, the engine rocked a little just above idle, from about 1000 to 1500 rpm and that to is now totally gone. I am sending the injektors that I pulled to Greazzer for calibration, so these Pik-N-Pull units are just temporary. So, with a set of 'junk' injektors, where the pop pressures are unknown, the overall smoothness of the engine is quite remarkable, although it is a bit noisier than it was with the old (2100 psi) injektors. I think this is due to a slight advance due to lower opening pressures. Not a bad afternoon project!!!!

400 miles later....Lots more noise at idle, runs smoother overall, no off-idle rocking and a velvet-smooth exhaust pulse. I now have less off-boost power, but more on-boost power and less visible smoke both on & off boost with these lower pressure, rounded-pintle used injektors....

So far, sounds like a Freightliner at idle, but has a much smoother idle overall, less smoke and good power, of course, at 14.7 psi of boost and 3 turns CCW + 3.0mm of shims under the ALDA, you are going to have a little power...:-)
Seems like it is getting better mpg. I don't have my mileage figures just yet, but wil post them later this week....

Someone may have covered this but if so I will repeat it, because IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After any IP work, ALWAYS have a 17MM open end wrench in your hand when you start the engine for the first time after the work. If the engine runs away, start breaking loose the injector lines at the injectors one at a time. Quickly loosen each one until it dribbles fuel and then loosen the next one. After several of them the engine will die and be saved. BTDT!

Kind of off topic but......
I just bought an 82 300D from a guy in Philadelphia. When I bought it he gave me quite a few spare parts for it. One of the parts is a spare NOS injection pump. That said, I don't really need it and I was wondering how much it would be worth if I were to sell it on eBay or to someone here on the forum. Oh, by the way even though I'm new and don't really know any body on the forum yet if someone wanted the injection pump I would give it to he/she for a good price regardless of what it is worth.
Anyways, let me know Drew |
