300TD fuel guage sending unit

Does anyone know how to access the fuel guage sending unit in a 300TD? Do I have to drop the fuel tank or is there an easier way?

Mike

Accessing your sending unit

Greetings Mike,

To gain access to your sending unit on your station wagon remove the rear floor compartment lid and the plastic panel or tray beneath it. You should find your sending unit and wiring harness once you do this. If you are replacing or removing this unit, a new seal will have to be installed or your tank will leak fuel as it sloshes around.

This is the beauty of MB and actually VW and Audi. To gain access to sending units or fuel pumps, you don't have to remove the fuel tank. For my Passat and my neighbor's Audi 100, there is an access panel in the rear floor, above the tank. To get to the sending unit in my SD and the W123 sedans, you just remove the first aid kit and there you go. Now, I know how to get to the one in my TD. These are cars were definetly built to be worked on.

Fuel gage will not register beyond half when full but decreases when fuel is used.
Is this mean a bad sending unit?

Could just be sludge on the wires the unit slides on.

You will need to remove the sending unit and clean it. here is a good DIY for the W124.

DIY w/pix -- W124 fuel sender disassembly/cleaning/testing

Just noticed you have a 300TD, that would be a little different than the sedan. Did you mean, Turbo Diesel, or Touring Diesel?

another member with a TD that lives near me!
if you are discussing a Wagon, then it's fairly easy to remedy, if your tank has not collapsed from vacuum... if it's a sedan, slightly more so!

just pull sender and clean with carb spray-avoid tweaking the nichrome wires which are hair like in diameter - bottom of sender contacts and top can get sludged up and not create good electrical contact -good luck!
