Found something in my oil pan
I am pretty sure this came out of my oil pan when I drained the oil. The only other explanation is that it was already in the drain pan, but that is not likely.
Is it part of the timing chain guide rail?

The photo is not clear enough to tell.
What do you think it is made of?

Bits and pieces
Yes, possibly a piece of the guide rail. When I changed the head on my '87 300D I discovered that the upper guide rail was broken and numerous pieces were missing. Give serious thought to pulling the side oil pan so you can inspect for more bits and pieces.
For a picture of my broken guide, see the first post in this thread. Jeremy

It does look like part of the guide. Also, I am pretty sure I can hear my chain dragging on something at idle and quiets up as soon as I raise the RPM. How do you check chain stretch on these?

Remove the valve cover, turn the engine by hand clockwise until the camshaft lines up with the mark on the cam tower, then read the marks. If you can't see the marks, turn another 360 degrees. CLOCKWISE! always, please.

Do you mean clockwise from the driver's position? What happens if you turn these engines counter clockwise?
Also, it is pretty easy to pull the side oil pan?

While I'd worry about the little piece of plastic in the oil pan, what I'd be most concerned about is how the tape measure got in there!!

No,
It looks like parts of the black, rubber piece around the oil strainer. They have lugs that rest near the bottom of the pan and they frequently break off...

I wonder why some get hard and some do not. When I replaced mine around 250-260k or so, it was still somewhat soft/flexible and nothing was broken off. I put in a new one anyways...

Good question, I have seen them soft and pliable with 200,000+ miles and others hard as glass with less than 100,000 miles on the clock...

Doktor Bert I was hoping you'd stop in. I accidentally rotated my 603 in the wrong direction for a few revolutions with the crank bolt. There seems to be mixed opinions on this causing harm to the timing chain components and I would value your opinion very much.
Thanks, Brian

Turn the engine clockwise by hand, (as you face it from the front of car, looking rearward). If the cam and crank marks line up correctly, you are OK. The main danger from turning an engine backwards is the chain jumping a tooth on a sprocket. If that has not happened, no harm/no foul.
