1984 300CD for sale

I'm selling my 1984 300CD Turbodiesel. Car is good for restoration/project or good parts car. Car has not run in approx. 10 years. When last run, engine had a knock. Intertior is rough. Rust is minimal. Located in South Jersey. $800 609-859-5423 Also, have good engine available, $450. See pics in Forum Cars for Sale.

300cd

I found an exceptional, low mileage 1981 300cd, which I am seriously considering, however it seems very slow to accelerate. There are no service records, and I doubt it has had more than periodic lubrication.

The car seems too nice to modify, but it could be a hazard in freeway traffic, where one might be assalted for delaying progress.

Typically modified near classic cars immediately decline in value. So, is a clean cd likely to increase in value? And if sacrifical, what modifications have been most cost effective?

croughbonz, clearing the ALDA line, new fuel filters, rebuild injectors, adjust valves, etc. are easy fixes which, if the engine is intact, should bring it back to respectable performance. you might have a professional check the compression on the engine before buying it. start a new thread to talk about engines if you like, though, as this question has nothing to do with coupes.

1. My own crappy judgement. I got royally ripped off on a long-distance deal by a bottom-feeder. That's on me.

2. Never saw any mention, until after I owned it, of the headroom issue. As in much less than a sedan. As in, I am 6ft 4ins and I can barely hold my head up in the car.

Great. A rusty** garden shed on wheels that I can't even drive comfortably.

**: yes, Coupes RUST. Even in California, when the windshield seal has leaked like a sieve into the car and the water has sat on the floor (I got it from Cali, but I wonder if the car spent some of its life further north on the west coast).

X3 or 4 on the headroom. I passed up on an 82 in decent condition for th same reason. Compared to the sedans, the coupe feels quite cramped. Simpler-better, I think you might be a bit taller than I. Id definitely go for a decent drive in someones coupe with a good working adjustable seat before commiting to buy one. Be worth it to really get a feel for the car

Yeah, if I ever wind up with a coupe I'm swapping in bucket seats from another car(TBD). In my w123 sedan I had to lean way back or I'd smack my head on the roof all the time. Same in my DD, but I'd rather have the leg angle of a truck than cut down the seat brackets.

I absolutely regret my CD, but because it's an om617 turbo, not because of the coupe body. Mine is unmolested, now running well, but I may let it go simply because i prefer the non turbo om616 and 617.

I've near 6k in the car now. I'd take my bath and fleabay it for 4 and put it under my lessons learned, or maybe I'll put it up for swap.

This is an older thread, but since I found it, I will respond. I don't regret owning a CD at all. My first 'Benz was a 1982 300CD Signal Red with a black interior. I have only seen one other CD in that color (in mach4's thread on a car carrier). I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of owning, fixing, and driving the car. At first I did not even know what I had. I just bought the first Diesel car I could afford. Later I found out how much in demand a rust free CD in a fairly rare color combo was worth. Since that first 'Benz, I am up to about 26 (5 being coupes) that I have owned. That first one was my favorite, and my second favorite was the other '82 that my niece now has.

I don't regret having any 'Benz at all. They are all fun, and worth every penny I have spent on them...Rich

I think out of the dozens (well, over 100 but i'm counting when I had a tow truck and bought cars at salvage auctions to fix and resell), I've owned there is only one great regret, and two 'really wish I hadn't'. The great regret was selling my '69 Superbee for $800 when I was a kid that didn't know any better. I've literally cried over not having it (or one like it), back when I used to drink. If I ever win the lottery I'm getting one.

The two 'wish I hadn'ts' were a '66 two stroke saab and this '82 300CD. Both are cars that just seem to dislike me. Both a history of me going in to do full restorations, and in both cases I made some costly mistakes. I finished the 2 stroke saab and sold it for a pittance to get it out of my sight, buyer made a killing reselling it. The CD may sell, if not I'll drive it awhile before doing the interior to see if it wants to be nice.

Croughbonz, adjust the valves and maybe check the compression.

The 81 coupes didn't have a turbo, AFAIK.

Shouldn't be THAT slow.

A friend had a non turbo CD, didn't seem to be dangerously slow.

Ya, I don't even find the OM616 to be 'dangerously' slow....something wrong.

My first MB was an 82 300CD, Signal Red with black interior, a $1000 beater that ended up being a reliable daily driver that needed minimal work for the 40,000 miles I put on it. I'd still have it if work hadn't forced me to sell (five days to get across the country to make a deployment).

If I saw another one in good shape I'd pick it up.

My '79 300D (Turbo-free vehicle...) would be considered fairly equivalent; it gets up to 65mph by the end of on-ramps and I've cruised in the fast lane at 80mph. I think they should top out closer to 95.

So it's definitely a problem with that vehicle and not indicative of them in general.

chasinthesun 11-23-2013 11:32 AM

My 83 coupe still moves along very well ,enough so to quickly excellerate past most gassers from a light ,I love it when a young kid drives up in a new ride and gives it the gas ,I get a look of despare as they drive faster to pull in frt of me,all to no avail from a car that was built before they were blowing spit bubbles during nappy time.
