Looks like it might be adjustable. Simple actually it looks like. Jamb nut and an adjustment which takes a largish hex. It pushes against the pinion gear to take up slack.

So I got down and looked at it. No adjustment there. A big bolt looking thing. Maybe it can be shimmed.

l remembered yesterday that I have the manual rack from the Cobra which I had changed over to power steering. I looked earlier and it appears to have an adjustment on it. I'm gonna go out and see if it can be swapped over to the power rack on the Stude.
Wish me luck!

So I looked again at the Stude's rack. It has a large threaded plug. The hex is smaller than the threads and on the head of the hex is a pointer arrow. I think it may be an interference fit and can be screwed in a bit to take up slack. Its well over 1" in diameter and I think I'll get my indie to try it.
The one on the cobra has a big plug which takes an allen and a lock nut on it. The manual rack I took off it has an adjuster too which acts more like a standard steering box adjustment with a bolt and a jamb nut.

Dang!
A fellow I know somewhat once told me to call him when I want to sell and he'd write me a check. I think he could too. Unfortunately I see in the obits today he has passed. He was a good man too.

That's a bummer. We're all aging - as ME points out, one day at a time. Sorry his time was up.

Yesterday I drove the CE out to my Indies for a few things. I forgot how nicely it drives! I plan to drive it more now whenever possible!
The 617 turbo hustles it right along!

One of these days I'll have to fit the clipped TC you sent me. I am looking forward to it.

So I drove around a bit yesterday. I took it out on the limited access near the shop and found it accelerated up nicely....so I was doing 80 in no time.....it was so easy I took itup to (indicated) 90 and drove a few miles no problem. Then I looked at the temp and it was nearly to (indicated) 230 degrees, so I backed down the speed to 65 and drove a couple miles. It did not come down much so I stopped and looked....no overheating indications, but I quickly noticed there must have been a 30 mph tailwind. Apparently it assisted the speed and hindered the cooling. It was near 90 degrees and I was running with the ac on. Going back into the wind it assumed a normal temp quickly and stayed that way.
I will look at adding a shrouded electric fan though. Good test drive. Tomorrow i am going to take it down to a Cobra party in Indy.

Mutt gets hot-ish (maybe 200-210 or so) at the end of a run (reminder, that's a full mile at full rack). When I hit the return road I flip on the cooling fan toggle switch and it cools right back down even in hot weather. So I guess I'm saying that a fan is a good plan even if you control it manually.

I got in about four hours of seat time today. The little CE never missed a beat. The temperature held steady and I have concluded the gauge may be off or the radiator a bit blocked.
It needs a shifter bushing. The seat bends me over a bit too much for all day driving comfort. But you know, who drove all day in 1939 in a work truck? Lots of folks like the truck and some are very enthusiastic about the diesel. Thanks to Roll Guy's Sanden upgrade the AC will run you out of the cab in its lowest setting. I had previously had trouble with the compressor hitting the cross member and loosening my belt. I had my Indie put a quarter inch spacer under the engine arm to raise the motor and it no longer hits! Wooo hooooo!
