Arrow catch can & cold / hot air intake how to

i don't know if this should go in the regular diesel section or the performance section, but here goes...

how to: oil/air seperator & coneyish air filter mod for om617 in a w126 & maybe others.

what you need:

fram ca8038 air filter

rubber 2" to 3" plumbing converter

harbor freight central pneumatic 1/2" standard air filter item #68279

stainless steel chore boy scrubbers (choice brand of crackheads everywhere! srsly!)

four heater hose fittings help! #56360

3" 90* street pvc fitting

either a 90* 3/4" hose barb elbow, or a 3/4" hose splicer and a 3/4" 90* hose. your choice.

1/2" npt tap, and 5/8" drill bit

several feet of 3/4" hose.

rotary tool with grinding bit.

necessary work:

drill a 5/8" hole in the side of the 3" pvc. expand the hole a little bit with the rotary tool so the tap fits properly. tap the hole and install one of the help! hose fittings.

disassemble the harbor freight air filter. remove the drain fitting from the bowl. drill the drain with the 5/8" bit. expand the hole with the rotary tool then tap & install one of the help! fittings.

grind out (expand) the bowl retainer drain fitting hole in order to clear the help! fitting.

stuff the chore boy in the clear filter bowl and reassemble (without the actual air filter element inside. DUH!)

install hoses: from valve cover to harbor freight air filter. from harbor freight air filter to intake elbow. from drain of harbor freight air filter to oil return tube.

jam fram filter on to wide end of street elbow.

insert small end of street elbow into 3" to 2" converter fitting.

connect fram air filter/elbow assembly to turbo inlet.

assembled photo coming soon. i put this info together so people don't have to do any trial and error in finding items that work/fit together.

enjoy.

Why would you purposely put a hot air intake and what is wrong with the current oil separator that is built into the valve over?

to get rid of the "trash can" so you can see what the h3ll is going on under the hood and get rid of the rattle.

When I did mine I went with ABS Plastic Pipe.

I also tested the under the Hood temp to see if it would really be sucking hot Air. What I found out is that even with the Car Moving at City Speeds there is enough Aif Flow that the under the Hood Temp is only several degrees higher than the outside Temp.

Where the under the Hood temp shot up was when the Car sat stopped in one spot. Since the Engine is idling the hot Air is not effecting the performance of the Engine. Once the Car moves the under the Hood temp drops quickly.

I managed to drip Oil on My nice new Air Filter. So I took an old Sweater Sleeve and made a Sock for the Air Filter.
I suppose it also acts as a pre-filter for large particles.

OMG i got this installed after work today & HOLY EFFIN A! the huge air cleaner with no harsh bends/restrictions woke the engine the eff up. i don't care what anyone says about how the stock air cleaner can flow plenty of air, this flows much much better. pics later. it's too dark at teh moment.

Cool story bro.

EDIT: For those wanting to use something other than a Fram filter in the same size:
MANN Part # MA1020
MANN Part # MA1035 "dusty environments"
MAHLE Part # LX2941
WIX Part # 46441

And my air cleaner

It's interesting to note all the different solutions that members come up with to solve problems with these old cars.

does it work?

uhm ....
is NO ONE else going to comment about how excellent his workbench is?
really ... a sit-down Miss Pacman?!

oh ... and your DIY is sweet, too.
if i don't end up having room for the standard air filter in my Metro, i'll likely go after something like this.

nice work

I never mounted mine, it was fine just sitting on the fender.

Smile

here are some pics. i'll try to get some video of how bad my blowby is and you will be able to see how this solved my fogging problem. oh, the filter doesn't need to be mounted. it's light weight enough that the rubber 3" to 2" reducer holds it just fine while the filter rests on the inner fender.

time for a manual boost controller. i can actually access it for easy adjustments now...

some of the grime from the leaky stock junk...
