Wouldn't be a bad idea to take along some biocide in case there is bacteria in the tank.

Far too risky. Give me the address and I'll take care of it for you :D.
No, really, if you're going to wing it driving back a just-bought car like that, I'm not sure if it makes much difference if it's 2 hours or 18 hours. If something's going to pop from lack of use, I would suspect it will do so fairly quickly. Best of luck and bring lots of health food for the road trip.... |

I got a friend to come with so it won't be too bad of a drive. i'll bring some filters (primary and spin on) and will stop to get some fluids on the way. I don't think i can get biocide on the plane! the bad part is after i drive it back it will sit for 6 month. I am in the process of moving back to KC from TN and so i cant juggle 3 cars in the move. I'll be sure to do all the precautions before i park it! |
I put 21 hours on my W116 recently in a non-stop trip from palm Springs to San Antonio. Most of that was 80-85mph cranking out 3400-3600rpm and still getting 25-26 mpg.
Just before that trip, my wife drove it from Apple Valley to Phoenix to pick up her cousin and came back the same day...Robert |
Update. Here now and the car is a silver 1984 300d with a navy interior. And get this 60k miles! Pictures to follow. About tp start the journey.

Incredible....take good care of it!
When you park it in storage, it's probably a good idea to unhook the accelerator linkage/GP relay/battery as an anti-theft. |

so... you can text us an update, but you cannot take the extra few seconds to have the phone include a picture? :P 60K... wow. NICE! still. it'll be worth it to take it to ANY garage, and put it on the lift and inspect the flex discs and the axle boots. SERIOUSLY! |

I'd be high as a kite to get that car even if I had to pay for it!;)

Sounds like a real peach!
Have a safe trip! |
Update from a pit stop. Per vstech's recommendation i check the flex disc and axle boots before setting off. Flex disc looks brand new but the axle boots look a bit beat up. Some cracking but none that are gpomg through and leaking yet. I checked it before i left and than about an hour into the trip and they seem to be holding up. But definitely something on the to do list and i will keep an we on it on this trip. Trans shift a bit hard and the door locks don't work. I am guessing vacuum leak?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...210_142445.jpg There is also a bunch of documents about a "European delivery program" does anyone know what this is? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2 |
Those rear axle boots will crack and keep on holding oil for maybe up to a decade?;)

Inner boot came apart on my subaru. Tried to replace w/ split boot rather than replace / reboot the axle. Split boot never held, so I packed it w/ grease and crossed my fingers. Scrapped the car over a year later, no complaint from the joint. I wouldn't sweat it.

European delivery program is where the owner flies to Germany, get's a tour of the factory and is given their car right there and then in Stuttgart. They then take a driving tour of the country generally thru one of several pre-selected routes - alps, black forest etc... before the car is put on board a ship for transport stateside. Where they then pick it up again at a pre-arranged location with all US paperwork and legality taken care of. A 77 300D I was looking at recently had a european delivery program badge on the grille. Yours should have one to I'd imagine.
