85 Euro as an everyday car, long drives... :)

Well, got myself a job over a local plant. When I say local I mean it's a solid hour+ drive at 70 for me each way. Been driving the 85 Euro TD and racking up the miles. HAve to say, best w123 I've owned. Still feels a little under powered when slow, like I need to adjust the alda, but at 70+ it just sings. Been getting around 25mpg, which is low compared to the 82 TD I just sold. My shift leader happens to be a member here and is restoring a 300SD (in green hornet) fashion. So we have plenty to chat about at work.

But, after all the how to fix this and how to repair that posts, I thought it would be nice to make a post on actually driving the crap out of one of these cars and just enjoying it.

I did the same with my 300D once upon a time. It was great minus the worn tires

Lowering it, flat black, red strip wheels, moons etc... He's doing an airbag setup (for lowering not bouncing) Should be really nice when done. There was a picture of a similar setup here a while back that he's using as inspiration. I'll have him post here and share.

He just ordered all the front sub parts last night, and removed the front springs for cutting a couple days ago.

The amount and type of driving you are doing is better for the Engine then City Driving.

Some people get several years of driving like that with no issues and others don't.

I can tell the difference. The engine has become so smooth, even just sitting and idling. It's almost like I have done a diesel purge to the car. I'm still going to open it up tomorrow and do a Valve adjustment, do the standard chain checks etc, just so I know it's done.

Cool story, i drive my 1985 300D about 25K a year and absolutely love it. Only issue i had was when the starter motor refused to crank the motor one morning.

Before the 85 used my 76 300D as a daily driver, i think i averaged 20K a year on that car, it too drove great.

You probably know this, but I add about a 1/4 quart of cheap ATF to each tank and notice a slight power improvement. I added a whole quart once and there was a noticeable improvement in power. Going 90 mph in my 81 300d was not such a chore for the car.
If you want better MPG try overinflating your tires a bit, but I don't recommend driving it that way in wet weather or snow.

Got myself back into IT at Volkswagen. Great job, Lots of walking required. It's really interesting watching all the cars being built. I really want a new TDI Passat now, 45+ mpg...

Wow. I changed jobs about a year ago. Now my commute is two miles in (the short way) and three miles home (long way). I usually take the car since I lose more time donning gear than I save by riding the bike.

It is awesome that you updated your thread after 5 years. I think long distances are when these cars are at their happiest. The Euro wagons look amazing in my opinion, and I can't believe they butchered the bumpers and headlights on the American models. I would love to see a picture of yours.
