help with head removal 74 240d

ok well , i do have the head off the block .. but it will only lift up 1" and seems like the chain tensioner guide need to be removed as it wider at the top ...
and cant seem to find how you remove it ...

This is a 1974 240D engine

i took apart a later style 79 few months ago and didn't have this problem ...
but i know the guides were different .

yea i did look in the manual , but my Chilton doesn't show this engine . and my Haynes has not came yet .

Ahhh, The good old style banana rails. Always fun to deal with.
Remove the crank pulley ( 3 8mm Allen bolts ).
The pin that holds the chain rail is directly beneath the water pump housing and is accessible through one of the 2 cut outs in the crank balancing disk.
It's M8 X 1.25 threat.
Replace the rail with a new stile one when you put the engine back together.

Check out this thread. It`s a 617 engine, but I think is the same as your engine. starts on pg 2, but shows the pin behind the balancer and how to pull the pin etc...

Pg3 shows how to make the adapter to pull the pin behind the balancer.

9 degrees of chain stretch
