I need a transmission for a 95 E300D, what other years or models would work?
I have on the internet and junk yards are saying that other gas model Mercedes transmissions will work and fit on my 1995 E300D.
What is the reality here? Will other year E300D's transmissions work and bolt onto this 1995 E300D? Thanks again

The 1990-93 300D 2.5 Turbo uses a similar trans that should work.

Just be sure you replace the governor gear and governor drive gear before installing it in your car! Last thing you want is that stubborn piece of crap to die! especially since the parts are less than $15!

Where are those governor gear parts located and what do they look like?
So are you say the 90-93 2.5 turbo transmissions will bolt right up to this model?

Yes the old 2.5 turbo uses a similar transmission which will bolt right up. The difference is the shift points, the 1995 E300D valve body and governor may have differences as it shifts at higher rpm compared to the 2.5 turbo
It will work bolt on but just shift too quick for the OM606's liking - for gov'ner look up James dean thread on replacing the drive gear for it. btw whats wrong with yours?

Shop never said what was wrong, they never dropped the pan! They said the area where he would need to check has to have the tranny removed? That does not make much sense to me. They had my car for two days and never really needed it since they didnt drop the pan! Quoted a minimum of $1100 to do this. I said no thanks this could rise quickly in price while still having a tranny with 252,000 on it. Confusing especially when they quoted $637 to install a used one if I find one and flush the system and install new fluid?
I wish I new what to look for after dropping the pan to see if the reverse piston is actually wedging itself against the transmission casing.

If you've got a reverse problem (B3 piston) you wont be able to see if by dropping the pan. The reverse piston is behind the primary pump.
In order to access this you have to drop the transmission and remove the front pump. A new piston is $91 The only things accessible from outside the transmission: B1 B2 Governor Kickdown Vacuum Modulator Bowden Cable

How difficult would it be to remove the front pump and look at the piston? Would the piston be scored in some way? Would I be looking for any broken springs etc?

the pump of the trans is right behind the torque convertor - which will require removal of the transmission from the car, in a 722.4 there is something near the front of the transmission that does hang up and cause reverse to go bonkers other than the B3 piston. I read about it on a manual somewhere.
Will have to look it up.
