No I haven`t replaced that spring, but just remembered the thread I sent, and reading through it. when I saw the wire you posted I thought it might be from that spring, and did some searching. Hope you get it repaired for not too much.
I do have about 4 of the 5-spd manual trans for some projects. probably the W201 and the W124 used the same similar transmission.

Hello Charlie,
Just looked at your profile, I was in Hong Kong flying Convair 880's for Cathay Pacific into Vietnam getting you guys out for R&R! right up to the last day! I too have three girls and the oldest 45 with two grandchildren.
Well I will probably have a go to strip it.....I have a young guy here who is a engineer on a fishing boat out of Boston....he's got the brawn and I've got the brains! LOL but we enjoy it when he is here on long leave.... 30 miles from here is Morocco, you would like it there, there are thousands of 123's 124's and older still on the roads and its fantastic to see them "fix" things on the side of the road with no special tools and often no electricity but great mechanics.....If I get stuck I'll take it over there!
By the way you should really run one of your Mercs in......my old girl has done 1 million kms + same engine and so far the same transmission!
in my opinion the 250 TD with the 5 speed box was the best w124 they produced...maybe the best car... MB's chairman has said that they were "over engineered" I believe them.
Thanks again take care,
Regards,
john
