Don:

Timing the injection pump to the engine's crank and cam is a very gross alignment meant to get you within 18 degrees of the correct position to then set the start of delivery (actually you locate the IP in the middle of the adjustment range so we're talking about 9 degrees either way). One tooth off equals 18 degrees. Then you adjust the IP start of delivery (think of adjusting the distributor on a spark/gas engine to a specific degree position at a specific RPM ) so it begins at 24 degrees BTDC (+ or - 1 degree, this from official M-B info only available to the dealer and not the public, bought my manual from the estate of a retired M-B tech).

The fuel tank I used came from an old Lawn Boy two stroke lawn mower, but a fuel tank can be found from another source or you can make one.

You will need the overflow pipe - perhaps Fast Lane has one, if not Performance Products sells them. To catch the fuel flowing from the drip tube, I flattened a Bud beer can to fit between the IP and the engine block. The special tool to remove the nuts on the hard fuel line is nice to have, but a flare nut wrench will also work.

Once you understand what the start of delivery is and how to do it, it is easier than you might think.

I suggest you buy the Haynes service manual for you car, very good info and it discusses IP start of delivery (I've seen them at Auto Zone). But, I recommend my way or rather the true M-B method for adjusting start of delivery instead of the one drip per second - other than that, the Haynes manual has very good info for start of delivery setting (and other info for your car).

Good Luck!
Tom
