Flat Rate Tear Down Tips:
This is how I kept myself, and my stall clean when working on 617's.
If tearing down a running 617 for a rebuild, follow these steps before removal/teardown. Drain the oil, oil cooler and filter housing as you normally would. Install a new oil filter. Fill the crankcase with diesel fuel and allow the engine to idle for 10-15 minutes. Drain all aforementioned areas and remove engine according to FSM. You will now be working on a very clean engine, instead of looking like a chimneysweep. Hope this helps....Robert

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't this be done on all engines for good measure?

Idle on diesel,I would just turn with starter,I have done this to a Ford with clogged oil screen and worked.
