How Fast Can Your 617 Go???

I started this thread to move this topic out of Bill Ladd's high mileage thread. As many of you know, I have ventured up to 200kmh in my W116 a number of times on flat ground and have posted a few videos on You Tube.

Now naturally, consideration muct be given to vehicle condition, tires, road conditions, but I thought this might be a fun topic of discussion.

Here is a cell phone pic of my W116 speedo on a recent high speed run...Robert

Before I took it to bits I saw an indicated 150 kph for my non turbo...

...but I only managed it once when I was in Germany (where there are no speed limits).

The previous owner of my former 77 300d told me he had it up to 105mph on I-25 in NM. Some pretty high rpm's there.

I've had my '78 300D up to just over 80mph on I-40. Not going to do that again though; I like life below 60mph.

I am planning to install the 2.47:1 soon and borrow a radar gun from one of my police friends and get some verified readings.

I am hoping for 140 mph after the gear change...

I've had my 300SD up to about 110-112ish per GPS.....not bad for an original motor with 320k on it.

My 190d conversion can do about 85 on flat ground after a long wait.

And of course the gassers make the diesels feel like slow motion....

In reality (checked with GPS), it was 143 km/h (89 mph).

With 2 bikes on the roof rack I hit 95mph in my 82 wagon on flat ground. I surely would have made it over 100 without the bikes. I also had a lot of black smoke behind me!

Do you miss it Govert?

That must be quite an old picture - you don't have the diesel tach fitted...

Together with my youth ;-)

Picture is from 2007, but the present-day owner did a Vmax test recently and it still does 143 km/h.

My old 300D NA did 170 km/hr once down a long steep hill. I think thats about 105 mph. That was when it was a pup with about 60k miles on it. I had to estimate it as the speedo only goes to 160.
