Not enough details. You have to pour it into the Cylinder and let it sit a week as it works slow. Even better if you can rotate the Engine a little and pour some more in and let it sit another Week.

I did not actual believe it would work but I was getting hazy gray smoke all of the time from My Volvo that sat for 1 year in My Back Yard.
I dumped 1/4 cup of MMO into the Cylinder by way of the Glow Plug Hole and let it sit one week.
After a week I rotated the Engine and dumped in somemore.

It only got to sit for another 3 Days and I had t use the Car. After an Oil Change I took it on the Freeway and there was reduced gray smoke. It took about 3 days of driving for the smoke to clear completely.

Like I said I did not expect it to work but MMO is cheap so I gave it a try.

i also have another later style 616 head ... so i actually planned on rebuiling the other head and just swaping them
On an old diesel like this straight 40 or 50 weight will not do any damage in the summertime that I can think of. Before multigrade oils hit the market engines like this used 40 weight straight. Probably an earlier version of the 616 four cylinder diesels did for sure. The heavier oils just seal the bores better and can reduce oil consumption to less than half.

These engines although it is hard to tell because of the seemingly endless odometer tampering or malfunctioning to get a clear picture. Of just how many miles the average example can accumulate if the oil is changed as it should be. I have a suspicion that for summer weather the engine longivity might be better with straight 40 over say a a 15-40. I still have my doubts about using any oil thinner than that is good for long life of the engine.

This is not the start of an oil thread but just some observations over many years. A diesel presents high thrust loadings. The viscosity is needed to keep metal to metal contact hopefully non existant.

Barry. I have seen the Oil issue go both Ways.

Where I worked We had several CAT Diesel Generators. If you used 30 or 40 wt Oil in the one it would burn more Oil then if you used 15-40 wt.

The other 2 you could use single or multiviscosity Oils and they seemed to use about the same amount of Oil.

You are right. After all our posts over the years we do not have any solid indications of how the oil useage profile is. Unless it has been previously reported and I missed it. Even on the 616 and 617 engines.

Usually when oil viscosity is upped. There is a reduction in consumption. A lot of oil burning snake oils to reduce oil burning are just viscosity increasers. A 15-40 oil is supposed to give you the same protection as a straight 40 weight. They well may but at the same time have a lesser viscosity at operational temperatures. Some quality 15-40 multigrade weight oils on the otherhand may approach a straight 40 oil in viscosity. Or even surpass it perhaps.
