W123 Steering Box Fitament Auto/Manaul

Hi, I've got a steering box from an '83 240D w/ automatic transmission that I'd like to put into an '82 240D w/ manual transmission, does anyone see any issues with doing this?

Thanks!

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

It should swap right in, the transmission shouldn't affect the steering setup.

The problem with it is that it's an oily, nasty, twist your hands and arms into unnatural positions kind of thing. Best done on a lift.

The fitment of the box is no problem. Same-same.

You'll find out if your engine mounts are collapsed while you're in there. It'd be a good time to replace them since you'll already be dirty and have the car on the lift. You'll find out if your primary lift pump has been seeping also. Dirty nasty things!

Check the steering coupler also.

Stock up on curse words. You might hire somebody to do some random cursing just to stay ahead. It's recommended to use Germanic curse-words but they are too hard on my vocal chords so I have to revert to Spanish.

No difference in the steering boxes. there was a thread a while back on using a centering bolt to line up the box before removing it. and also center the new box before mounting it.

Use some paint on the steering coupler or shaft so you know where it is centered.

Steam clean or power wash the area well in a car wash, helps to stay clean.

Seperate the tirerod at the Pitman arm, remove the bolt on the steering coupler, and the 3 15mm bolts behind the L/F wheel and it will drop down. helps to have a helper. (Wife?)

Charlie obviously has a good marriage - I advise you not to involve the wife!

The Pitman arm is most likely to be the only serious stumbling block - read the FSM for this there are several types and certain combinations...

Pitman arm removal was for me very difficult. Without a seriously hot and powerful heat source it was impossible for me to remove. I took it to someone else to get it done (Oh the shame).

When the steering box is out its easy to replace the oil filter to block gasket, a common oil leak on these cars.

Yes, she is my favorite wife. sometimes she goes with me to PNP.
Then I go shopping with her through the various dept stores. there is give and take on both sides to keep it happy.

My Mrs. is a wonderful lady but would never go to the PNP with me and I avoid shopping with her as well but we enjoy quite a few of the same things.

To the OP, do you mind saying why you are changing the box?

They are extremely durable.
