steering box adjustment, forum help

I decided to adjust the steering box on my Merc. I figured the adjuster was straight forward, there was a grub screw held by a nut. How simple could it be. Snug down the screw and tighten the nut.

I went for a drive. OOPS I had about 3" of steering wheel play.... Something is wrong here. I better do a search on peachparts.

Sure enough, turn the screw out till it feels a bit snug. I did that and turned it back in just a bit. Nice.

Thanks for helping me fix it.

I believe you turn the screw CCW to remove the play.

In bolt removal parlance, that would be backing it out.

So how much play in the steering wheel do you have now?

Tiny bit, maybe 1/4", it is less than a half inch. When I got the car with bad ball joints it was like 1.5". After the ball joints it was less than an inch.

Still have the rear sway bar links which click and are loose. They are on order. One of my shocks is leaking, will replace all of them although there is no real bounce.

Yep, that is why I didn't want it tight. I wish I had read the directions first, to see how much I actually moved it.

The steering box on a 123 is an incredibly durable device.

I like hearing that. Not that I abuse it, but want it to go a long time.

I just sold a car with a chassis with about 350,000 miles on it. The steering adjusted up great when I had it and it still is nice and tight.

I think that by just adjusting the steering box by blindly fiddling with the adjustment screw is potentially a dangerous thing to do...

...if you are interested in seeing how the adjustment can be made to the steering box - following the instructions in the FSM; but using "equipment" that can be made by yourself instead of the unobtainable special tools - then have a look at this thread

What a feeling it will be! A properly adjusted W123 / W116 / W126 power steering box

The adjustment procedure is towards the end of the thread.

It does involve steering box removal - though if you had a fancy torque wrench I reckon you might be able to do it with the steering box fitted to the car.

It was a post by you that fixed my problem. Thanks.
Edit: Actually I used the advise from twalgamuth. Good info.

No need to rebuild the box.

One of the points by my post was that I should figure out how to adjust it rather than blindly attempting it, I think I proved my point. I would agree that having lots of play in the steering box is potentially a dangerous thing.
