Power stering pump pulley squeak cure?
My power steering pump (240d) pulley makes a terrible squeaking racket for about 5 minutes until car warms up. IN attempting to isolate it originally, I was able to quiet it by squirting it with wd-40. It has now returned with a vengeance. I saw p/s pump pulleys listed but not carried on Fastlane. Is this what I need or is there a way to grease bearing on my pulley if I remove (if so I would appreciate instructions on R&R).
I am assuming that this is not related to p/s internals as they seem fine and my external squirt of lubricant silenced it. All help appreciated. P.S. somewhat OT, is it OK to contnue to use P/S bolt for valve adjustments (no clearance at crank until I repace Motor mounts).

My 1980 240D has the same problem. If the car sits for two days or more it squeals like dying pig on start up. I think my problem is caused by a small leak at the pulley bearing. The PS fluid level is down just slightly (I've been keeping an eye on it) and the noise goes away after about 5 minutes. I've been debating on whether to fix it right now or not. Seems like a lot of work considering it isn't too bad at the moment.

I suspect your front seal is leaking and dripping onto the pulley. When you start your car the oil that has leaked down the pulley and causes the belt to squeal until it burns off. The seal kit from the mecedes dealer is only $20 but it requires removal of the pump to replace it. (All outlined in a good repair manual). Don't spend big money on a new pump until you try this. If when you get it off the bearings are bad (there is play in the shaft) you can swap the pump for a rebuilt one.

I had a leaking seal with my pump. Adding 10% (by volume) of one of the "stop leak" products has SEEMED to have at least slowed the leak. My problem was not squeeling, but throwing ps fluid all over inside the engine bay, particularly onto the fan, which of course slings it all over.

Uh Oh.
I added the Prestone stop leak to mine -- except the instructions said to add the entire bottle. My pump now squeals a lot, and I am wondering if this is a self-correcting part of the processes, or a new problem?
The leak actually began when, on my mechanic's advice, I used ATF in place of steering fluid. I had tried draining all the ATF (with a turkey baster) but I can't seem to get all of it out. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. |

Perform a search for details.
Never had a leak (at least that I noticed) so have never addressed as problem went away after fluid flush. If you have a noticeable leakage, isolate it by having someone turn wheel to lock (raises pressure) and locate by fluid movement and replace the affected hose (likely culprit) or tighten fitting (next most likely).
Regarding fluid change, there are 2 methods, one for W123s that involves removing return hose for flush (post links another site with good detailed instructions) and a method that I posted for W124s that involves inserting tube inside canister at return port for flush. Remember to change the filter too. As part of my flush, I replaced fluid with Mercedes P/S fluid and now pump is no longer making any noise. Recommendation: always use Mercedes fluids (wheel grease, coolant, p/s fluid etc) except for oil, of course, and maybe ATF. Good luck. Reply if any questions or if you can't find posts. P.S. I never responded with this cure because until today forgot about problem and hadn't associated cure with fluid change (squeek just went away, like not noticing the proverbial clean face, and I didn't notice).
