Auto Salvage Yard Alert!

My local upull and pay has a '98 E300 sitting in its premium section. I haven't gone to check it out but an engine is $500 flat out for it.

I hope it was rear ended or something and the engine is perfect. I may have to pull it and put it in my '87 :D.

An om606 would fit. Just need to swap over the IP and fab up an exhaust..

riiighhttttt

I guess no one here wants it. I guess I will have to venture on over during my hour lunch tomorrow and see if there is an engine there.

daw_two 11-09-2012 10:37 AM

I'm not interested ...... BUT...

If you grab it and do that swap, do take a LOT of pictures and start a swap thread!!!! :)

TheDon 11-09-2012 12:02 PM

It's there. I need a pick up truck and an engine hoist. Stat!

It's there. I need a pick up, cherry picker. And someone to help. I have no way of testing it until I get home. The car had no body damage which worries me. I should have looked under it to see if it crunched anything. Hopefully it only had transmission issues.

You guys think I should pull it?

Alastair 11-09-2012 02:20 PM

Grab it while you can!

It should be a reasonably easy swap into the 87 W124 car, after all they did make some with the N/A 606...

All original W124 mounts/trans etc will line up and fit OK.

Your main issues are with the I.P. (the W210 E300 Turbodiesel has Electronic IP)--easily changed over to the eariler OM.603 pump.

The other issue will be the turbo that has a Vac operated / electronically controlled wastegate....
--Not sure if a 603 turbo will fit the (Awfull) 606 Turbo manifold.

It will be a fairly simple job to plumb up all the usual stuff....:)

TheDon 11-09-2012 02:28 PM

That's if the engine is ok.

Alastair 11-09-2012 02:30 PM

Isnt there any way that you can get it running just to confirm its at least a runner?

How about any warranty offered by the yard...?

TheDon 11-09-2012 03:32 PM

30 day warranty. So I'd have to get it home. Put oil in it and some how get it started. Currently trying to get a truck and engine hoist so I can bring it home and get it of the truck since it does weigh like 600lbs

Alastair 11-09-2012 03:41 PM

Yup--Its a Big heavy chunk of engine...

Ive got one in a lady-friends garage, intention was to put it into the W123 Wagon one day.

Being made redundant put paid to that.....!

So--You have 30 days to get it home and find/fit a 603 pump and run it up.....

(Alternatively and NOT recommended you can carefully hand-throttle the electronic rack in the original IP if you remove its side-cover.....)

TheDon 11-09-2012 03:52 PM

Crap I can't start it with the electronic ip. well I'll worry about it when I gets writhing sorted

I don't really need to spend 600$

Alastair 11-09-2012 04:14 PM

Well--As I said, You Could start it but you would have to hand-throttle the rack....

It would be pretty difficult to get a smooth even speed as the fuel-delivery from the IP is 'rising-rate' with speed for rack setting, hence the need for a governor...

--Should be good enough just to see oil-pressure and listen for horrid noises though....

winmutt 11-09-2012 04:18 PM

now if it was a 606 for $500, I'd be on the road already.

Oh I misread that. It is a 606 for $500. Drool. PUT IT IN THE 87 and do THIS ALL DAY LONG http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXuwLfHKorw

colincoon 11-09-2012 05:12 PM

Just do it, Joe.

TheDon 11-09-2012 06:08 PM

Engine hoist found for Sunday, I might have my room mates truck if not guy with the hoist has a truck I can use. I have the removal procedures. And all I need now is just hope and pray no one pulls it before me because I'm to have to go grab it Sunday

Bolts for engine stand: length and thread please! I have a 1000lb stand from harbor freight that might do the job.

Also, how do I put the transmission in neutral if I do not have a key for the car?
