Performed a valve adjustment again, and everything was pretty close to correct. (One or two were slightly loose, but that might have something to do with me having initially adjusted them in freezing weather on the side of the street when I brought the parts car home.) I also replaced the somewhat rounded set nuts on both valves of cylinder #1 while I was in there.

There's nothing to report on whether it made a difference, because I opted to replace the thermostat while the car was in the shop, and the gasket I need for that still hasn't arrived, so the car hasn't been run, yet. I should have the cooling system put back together later today when the gasket arrives.

Timing is pretty much spot on. There's about one degree of chain stretch. I'll tinker with the rack damper bolt after I check to see if the problem is injector related.

Too bad the car doesn't have cupholders... I would fit it with cocktail shakers and use it to mix drinks.

Add an R in front of that and we would have a whole new set of problems to discuss.

Rack damper has zero effect on the shake. In fact, it seems to do nothing at all.

Also, cracking injector lines one at a time did not help in pinpointing any particular cylinder as the culprit, but there is a definite stutter when revving the engine up a bit in the lower rpm ranges.

Well I reckon you're back round wondering about the injectors then.

Do you have a spare set?

(I wouldn't ask most people here about a spare set of injectors - but we both know how we are! I'm sure you've got another set kicking about somewhere...

...it must be a case of where - oh where...)

Ha ha. Yeah, I'm that kind of guy. I have two spare sets, but they're both from NA motors. I have 20 brand new uninstalled nozzles, too. The nozzles in the car now were replaced by the PO of the donor car, but I don't believe he pop tested anything when he did it. What I don't have are shims or a pop tester. You must be so disappointed in me! LOL!

I do have a crappy bottle jack that won't lift more than an inch for some reason, and I can weld and braze all kinds of crap together. I guess I better go dig up those DIY pop tester instructions, eh?

Well you could do that - but as you are on the right side of the pond you might want to try someone like MikeD who does injectors for people here I believe or go and visit a shop...

...I was just thinking "it's cold outside" why arse about with old bottle jacks...

Well, not having to work outside helps, but besides that, I'm just cheap. If I could have a spare set tested and balanced with a set of my new nozzles for a reasonable amount of money, I would consider it. Times are kind of tough right now.

Well this is weird.

Now the terrible shake has gone away on its own. Sure, it still shakes a bit more than I'd like, and the rack damper doesn't do squat, but it won't mix drinks anymore.

Maybe there was a bit of crap in an injector or something. I'll never know. The stumble is still present in lower RPM ranges, however, and the hesitation, especially while cold, is still aggravating, but at least I am no longer a human paddle ball being bounced between the seat and headliner while sitting at stop lights.

These cars are just vexing at times, aren't they? LOL!

Well if your maintenance schedule is up to date a bit of heavy use (verging on Italian tune up) might help to keep it running nicely. Get some air through its lungs!
