W124 Muffler Interchangability? (Diesel)

So my 1986 Euro 300D's muffler literally fell off on Friday, at the section right where it enters the muffler.

I'm swimming in part numbers look at replacements on EPC -- it seems the 300D (straight 6 non turbo) had a different rear than the 300 turbo diesel, than the 2.5 TD, than all the gassers....

Peach parts / pelican was closed when I called, so I couldn't bother them (yet), but EPC seems to still show a unique part for my car. & search seems to be failing me too

I don't care about "performance" on a 2" exhaust on a car that had 100hp when I started pre-Kindergarten , I just need to quiet it down!

So, can I put on any REAR section muffler for a w124 I find? For any W124 diesel? I can see that the front sections are very different, and the middles as well.

TIA!

Depends if they line up or not where they are supposed to link together. I had a similar question with my conversion....turned out the down/center pipe on a 190d WILL meet up properly with the rear resonator/muffler section from a 190e 2.3....despite the pics in the EPC showing/claiming otherwise. It was literally bolt in with no issues....since the path under the car is similar for a lot of the exhaust systems on a given chassis, I would suspect they may work.

Funny, mine rusted away in the same spot on my 300E.

The muffler I got allows you to clamp over the existing pipe, if that helps...

Appreciate the feedback guys. EPC seems to show the '87 is a few pixels shorter on the rear section than the '86....but that may not matter. With some digging and checking into part numbers, it looks like I can get both from the dealer for about the same (about the same as aftermarket too).

So I'll probably go that route, junkyard is still tempting though.

colincoon, funny you mention that as well -- my friend just mentioned his 300D had the same spot fail as well. Somehow a muffler shop welded the rusty bits together!
