92 300D Tranny Failure
It's fixed, but I have questions.
Failed after 6 months repair. 35MPH on country road set on cruise and this time it just goes to neutral. Had been shifting perfect. Had reverse, but no forward gears. Failed 6 months ago on mild acceleration in a parking lot. Same symptoms. Shop said the sprag failed. This time, again the sprag failed. Fluid was perfectly clean, correct level. I am a diesel mechanic, and know trannys, but just don't repair them, just replace and adjust. Cost of special tools not warranted. Shop said they almost could not find the defect, there was no scoring or obvious damage. Hairline crack. I did not see the old part. Was planning on giving car to my daughter, as this car is immaculate and would be a nice gift. But if I am giving a gift that is highl likely to fail, I must think twice. I can find nothing online that indicates the sprag on this tranny is prone to failure nor nothing that would cause it. Any ideas? Wayne |

Have you looked into the B1, K1, and K2 springs? I think the B1 failing is capable of taking out the forward gears but I am not a transmission guy.
Search for information about those springs on the forum. They are cheap from the dealership and easy to change.

I haven't come across any one mentioning that the sprag clutch has gone on either 722.3 or 722.4 or 722.5 before - Mercedes usually call it the freewheel.
You can see in this picture when it is used (it is the column headed "F")=> I think that it was most probably working if you had reverse. The usual culprit for "no forward gears (well it is the 1st three actually) but still have reverse" is the B2 piston. I encourage you to have a look at the transmission yourself! 722.303 in bits photo shoot

It failed Again
In the shop now warranty repair. Same symptoms. No forward gears.
Talked to the mechanic. Damndest thing I've ever seen, he said. It would hold one time, then not the next. Sprag. Never had one do this, he said. should get it back next week. |

So Embarrassed he said
Mech left the pin out of the B2 band. The sprag was bad the first time, but the second time it was error.
Shop foreman is driving it to put some mileage on it. |
