circle clip in my oil pan
Well the other day my 1983 300d developed a knock. I had it towed home and have been looking to see if it's something simple. Well I adjusted the valves. didn't help. So I dropped the oil pan to look for metal. I found a circle clip. Does any one have a clue of where it came from? I can't post a picture right no but I'll get one as soon as I can.

the clip actually looks like the clip that comes with a turbo repair kit.

hmm. I wonder how the turbo clip could be inside the pan?
get a pic up as soon as you can, with a known sized object in the pic with it. say a nickel or a dime...

I can't remember exacely but something holds the Oil Pump Spring and the Chain Tensioner onto the Shaft.
Added: I found a pic see item #44; it does not look very big.

Could be a vacuum-pump part. The bearing rod uses circlips too.

The clip is about the size of a dime. The diameter through the center is about half an inch.
I guess I know most of answers that I need to know. I'm still tring to figure out if the engine is toast or not. I really like this car but an engine is gonna be hard to find here. The clip I found looks like the lower left one. The only difference is mine is bent a little. Kinda like it got smashed and bent getting to the oil pan. Galatic travellers will seldom mention their planet of origin. That circlip once identified will allow you to examine wherever it came from. Then you can examine to see if it is missing or has been replaced at it's source. Wise to run it down but generally I would not expect replaceing the engine at this point if it is running well is going to be an issue. Are the rocker shaft arms retained with clips of about this size?
I cannot identify that clips source but others will. It is almost impossible to be a retaining clip from the turbo. It would have had to be physically dropped down the chain area portal to make it to the oil pan if it was. I cannot see that happening. |

Well I'm in Hammondsport, NY 14840. I see there are lots compatible just the turbos are a little harder to find. It sucks because this car only has 161000 on it now. It's actually rust free except a quarter sized spot on the one fender.

Sorry, I missed the presence of a knock. The c clip may or may not have any involvement but you have to find out.
I was wondering if it might be from the vacuum pump as a shaft retainer in there of some sort. A clip from that area could show up in the oil pan. Find and have a look at an exploded view of a vacuum pumps components of your type. . This to see if a simular clip from there is a possibility. If there is a lever mounting rod in there out of place it might easily produce some form of knocking sound. Also thanks for posting your location. As it turns out you are not light years away from my location. I hope this all works out well for you. |
