Fuel Mileage/ Range on a tank 300SD's
Just curious, I have noticed that my fuel gauge has started the dance when around 1/4 tank. Not too concerned and will address that later. I am interested in what range most are getting on a full tank of Diesel. I know this is not scientific with all the variables but am curious. I have somewhere in my storage my fathers ( original buyer/owner of the 85 300SD ) log book for every tank of fuel he ever put in. It includes where it was bought, how much per gallon etc.
He was meticulous with this car until about 10 years ago. Anyway I have only been filling up when I get to a 1/4 tank and the gauge goes nuts. It usually takes 15-16 gallons and I am full. This takes me to around 430-450 miles. What are others getting ? Alan |
My 300D will take only 14.5 gallons when the needle gets to R. about 420 miles.

Interesting. I want to start tracking m mileage more accurately after I clean the tank and strainer as well as repairing/ cleaning the sending unit. I do not have my owners manual with me so I am not certain what size tank have. I remember it was less than 20 gallons I believe. Also the low fuel light never came on ( due to tank sending unit ?)

I seem to recall 600miles to a tank as a number I shot for on my 85SD... IIRC it's got a 21gallon or a 23 gallon tank. there is a thread for mileage on the SD and the SD only by Brian Carlton I'll try and find it.

Thanks, I tried a search but what came up was not exactly what I was looking for. As for the per tank I kinda want to compare those of others to my Dad's records from when this car was new and as it got higher miles on it.

550 miles on a full tank. When the red low-fuel triangle illuminates on my 300SD (1978) you have 5 gallons remaining. I have run the car bone dry before and it takes 21 gallons to fill it…

Thanks for the link V.S. Tech. An awful lot to read however it was exactly the type of info I was looking for. I missed this thread somehow. Also Doktor bert thanks. My Drive to work at the moment is 40 miles each way with 25% of that being on rolling back roads at around 50mph but still u and down hills.
The rest is pretty much 55-60 but fairly flat. At a glance I am getting 26 mpg with: New Tires _ Kumho SR722 ? Valves adjusted needs filters replaced Tools in the trunk Portable router table and Dovetail jig in back seat 4 old brake rotors off my Suburban I will get these things removed and see how things go. I recently started driving her a little easier in respect of her age. Thanks Alan |
600 miles on a full tank...........coming in on the fumes with a high pucker factor..........
560 is the generally accepted safe limit for me. The gauge is not accurate at the last 1/4 tank due to accumulated black goo that is, apparently, not curable without a tank removal. |
Just Over 400 miles to a tank
...and I start looking to refill. Get 26-27 mpg on the highway, which is 95% of my driving. Usually takes about 15 gallons to refill.
I have teased 450 miles out of a tank, but I don't like to cut it too close.;) |
