Oil cooler issue
So after a good drive i open my hood while the engine is running and notice my oil cooler is stone cold! Im used to it being about as hot as the radiator. it is in the 50's here in texas. my oil pressure is perfect and the oil cooler has always been hot. I have heard there is some type of thermostat for the oil cooler? what temp should it open at? I have an IR thermometer and the side of my filter housing is about 80 celcius and the cooler is the same as ambient temp. I dont get it! Im going out of town for Thanksgiving and dont want my engine oil getting so hot that it looses its ability to lubricate well. Any help would be great!

Yes, there is a thermostat in the oil filter housing. Controlling temperatures are listed in a thread on here somewhere but I can't remember the figure. Search on 'oil thermostat'. I think it's just not hot enough for the thermostat to open. I don't think you have to worry about driving this time of year. Lots of these engines were sold without oil coolers. Driving across Texas in midsummer at 120mph with the AC on might be another issue.

You show a 1983 Mercedes 300cd in your profile.
A turboed Engine should have a working Oil Cooler. Likely OK for driving around Town till fixed. Locate a place to get the Part first. The Oil Filter Housing has to come off to get at the Thermostat. The Stock Block to Housing Gasket is really nicely made. There should be pics of the Gasket in the below thread. I doubt there is anything wrong with your thermostat in the oil cooler. It has a wax pellet inside of it and is controlled by the temp of the oil.
Starts to open at 110C 230F, and fully open at 123C 253F + -. Get an IFR lazer pointer temp thermometer and check the temp of the oil filter housing after a drive when you feel the oil cooler is not warm enough. Charlie

Thus far, there is no conclusive indication that anything needs fixing.

For winter driving I agree you shouldn't have any issues.

Ok, how can i heat up my oil to test this? After a good drive on the highway (going 75) i quickly exited and checked my oil filter housing temp and it was 83 celcius. The oil cooler was still stone cold! hmm...

or put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Or build a fire under the engine before going for a drive

Ok, i like the fire idea After hearing 110C is when the thermostat opens up, im not too worried anymore. I just remember in the summer after every drive the oil cooler would be too hot to touch. I will keep checking the temp of my filter housing though. Thank you all for the help!

The above means that He checks that once in a while (something I don't do) and I believe His symptoms. But, it does call for a more conclusive check. Another Member mentioned the Wax Pellet inside of the Oil Cooler Thermostat. That is similar to how the Coolent Thermostat and they fail sometimes; so the same can happen to the Oil Temp Thermostat.

So would i post it like how i did this one? I did a lot of research here on the forum but have not seen a GM alternator installed. I needed higher amperage for stereo, 100/80w hella and i just ordered some HID bulbs and 5 3/4 Hella e code reflectors to replace my yellow fog lights I could just start an electrical upgrade/ modification thread?
