Getting 240D and 300D up and running.

Hi,

I am the owner of an 83 300D and an 82 240D, but they have always been my dad's cars. He got them pretty inexpensively to fix them up, but never got around to it. Sadly, he passed away in February, and I'm now figuring out what to do with them. He always kind of wanted to run them on biodiesel or get them to someone who would. I want to see someone enjoy them because I know my dad would've loved that. Unfortunately, I was never half as good with cars as my dad, and I won't be running them on biodiesel. They don't run right now, but aren't far from getting there.

Mainly, it would really help if someone in the St. Louis area could come take a look at them so I can see everything that needs to be done on them. I want to get them in good shape so someone can really enjoy them.

Any advice you guys have on this?

Thanks,
Alex

Alex ---

First, please accept my condolences in the recent loss of your Dad. It sounds like you admired his mechanical ability and would like to tinker a bit in his honor.

Secondly, welcome to the best car forum I've ever found on the net. Even though I've been here 6+ yrs, I'm still a baby in the woods compared to the trailblazers that have been here since the early days. Let me suggest you click on User CP, edit Details, and add St. Louis as your location. Wish I lived closer, so I could show you the ropes.

If I were in your position, I'd probably plan on keeping one. Anyway, as a beginning, when was the last time all the fluids were changed in either car?

Good Luck and post pics when you get a chance. We like to see the "new" cars.

I will echo daw_two's welcome and condolences.

Having been there, I would first generally caution that is circumstances such as storage permit, you shouldn't worry about dealing with the cars until there is enough distance from the loss that you feel relatively neutral about it. (In my own case, for example, I am just now selling off my mom's antiques, several years after her passing.) Fiddling with old cars can have some therapeutic value at the right time, but at the wrong time could also just be a recipe to get upset.

That being said, I would suggest you deal with one car at a time. The fact your father got them inexpensively may mean that he got a good deal... or that they need quite a bit of work. Rust is often an issue on these old cars. Take some some photos and post them here. Then provide us with some info:

- any history you have prior to your dad's ownership,
- how long parked,
- if it was running when your dad got it,
- have you tried to start it, if yes what was the outcome.

You can start with either car, but the 240d is a somewhat simpler car in some respects so it could be a bit easier to get operational (not just starting but with respect to heater/AC, etc.).

There are folks on this forum who will be happy to assist you, regardless of how new you may be to this stuff, but you will need to actively participate.

I recommended He come over to this Forum.
I though We might have a Member near St. Louis willing to take a peak at the Cars.
