Put one as soon as you can. While you can live without one for test purposes, you're in a hot country and can get stuck for hours in traffic.

I think I may just get one to be safe. When I bought the engine it didn't come with an oil cooler. But it did have those hose fitting at the filter housing. They are crimped shut at the moment. Can anyone confirm if they HAVE to be looped? Thanks

Thanks for the link. Now I'm scared. Anybody have a pic of the oil cooler thermostat?

Pic shows the two crimped ends. I don't know how the oil cooler works. does it just allow some of the oil to pass through the oil cooler or does it divert the oil 100% to the oil cooler... in which case crimping is a disaster waiting to happen.
At the moment I can't buy an oil cooler due to budget constraints, option is to loop the lines or to remove the thermostat. Whichever is easier. I'll just install a proper oil cooler once everything is done and the budget frees up.

So... where is this thermostat? Can't find a diagram.

Here's my take on any of these sorts of issues:

What M-B engineer would install something mechanical on a car that really serves no purpose? We may not understand the purpose- but we're not design engineers... and since we're NOT design engineers, we have no business second- guessing the intent of the overall design, nor do we have any business undoing what the design engineers have done. From our dilettante's perspective, doing what we think will be OK may be perfectly logical in theory, but disastrous in practice.

Which is why I have just removed the 2 couplings to be "uncrimped" and welded/extended. Will be looped together with rubber hose for the time being until such time that I procure an oil cooler.

The Oil Filter Housing has a Thermostat that works Similar to the Coolant Thermostat except that when closed the the Oil does not go through the Oil cooler.
When when the Oil gets hot enough the Thermostat opens and (unfiltered) Oil is diverted out of the Oil Filter housing to the Oil Cooler.

The returning Oil goes back into the Oil Filter Housing to be filtered.

What is desputed is what happens if the Thermostat opens and the Oil Cooler ports are blocked.
Some say the Oil circulation will be blocked.
On 617.952s the Manual has that there is circulation; but, that one Guys Engine got dammaged when the Oil Cooler Ports were Blocked.

So for me I think it is better to paly it safe and loop the Oil Cooler ports together so there is free Oil Circulation.

The picture below is not of your specific Oil Filter/housing it is for a 617/951.
The item 86 circled in green is the thermstat.

I am not sure where the Oil goes if you remove/deleted the Thermostat.

Thanks. I think it's too much work removing the t-stat. So I'm just gonna have a loop made. I'm glad I asked. Thanks to all that contributed, I had no idea of the potential disaster. My main concern was cooling, not circulation... which was a bigger issue.
So i'm gonna loop it for now... oil cooler will have to wait.
Thanks again!!!

An oil cooler from a pick n pull is not that expensive. You could probably pick one up with the hoses attached and avoid having to make a loop.

Yep... But I did get to "scavenge" at a pick'n'pull when I was in CA somewhere in a Rancho Cucamonga or something back in 2004. That's where I got a blower motor off a 190E to install in my 300D. Good times. I envy you guys... just for the pick'n'pulls alone. haha, and the nice clean air.

Well my '84 Euro 240D had no oil cooler. It went about 380K miles before overhaul and made it another 125K miles after that. Of course it wasn't a turbo.

In today's world though, we have synthetic oil which will deal with a lot more heat. Sounds like it would be a good choice for one without an oil cooler. Make sure you use a synthetic specifically blended for diesels though.

It would be interesting to compare the O/F housing from a Euro 240D, That would answer the question.
