Manual Glow Nightmare!

Came out this morning to new battery reading .4 on the DMM! Noticed last night driving home that alt was not charging battery (this has been happening lately and is intermittant) Installed a manual push button glow system to my '75 w115 300d and have experienced battery drains on several occasions, again intermittantly! Glow harness ground is not grounded for fast glow system per instructions (old loop style temp sender ground) Glows are all connected and power wire runs to solenoid and then to battery - one push button wire to small terminal on Ford solenoid, the other to positive battery post -What happened, I read on Youtube that this setup can be miswired somehow creating large power drains like I am experiencing - how exactly? This is driving me nuts!

Loosen the Connection at the point in Red. Use a Digital Volt Meter and put the Black Probe on the Wire end and the Red Probe at the Solenoid connection. If there is a Voltage drain you will see a Voltage reading on the Meter.
If there is no Voltage shown on the Meter there is no Voltage Drain going through the Glow Plugs.

Do a similar thing to the Switch Curcuit with the Switch off.

Thank you, but why would this be intermmittant? Wondering about how my set up is wired as apparently it can be mis -wired? From last glow plug to solenoid, a long lead connected to one terminal on solenoid. From the opposite terminal on solenoid a lead running to battery positive with an inline 80amp fuse. two wires to starter, one on battery side connection side and the other to tiny post on solenoid . .

Not clear to me what you are using to activate the solenoid. Do you have a switch inside the car? As I see it you should have heavy gauge wire on the glow plug side of the system and 12 volts wired to an intermittent switch inside the car to activate the solenoid and energize the glow plugs.

I am not speaking about the Alternator part of the issue only the Glow Plug part that you say may be causing the load.

It is hard to trouble shoot this sort of stuff when we are not there.
The intermittent Switch that Kerry spoke of means the Switch is only on when you push and hold the Switch Button Down.

There is a similar switch that you push down on the button to turn it on and have to push on the button again to turn it off. If you have one of those Switches and forget to press it again and turn it off some times the problem becomes intermittent.

In any event there is so few compontents the system you should be able to find out the issue. There is only Wire, the Switch, the Solenoid and the Glow Plugs and I suppose you could add the ground.

If you think the Solenoid or Switch is causing the issue you need to replace them.

I set up a system as you describe in a loop plug 616 and it worked quite well. The key is using the starter relay to handle the current.

The circuit is simple. What MIGHT be happening though is that you might have a link in the chain that does not have the insulators on correctly. This would drop too much voltage across some of the plugs, causing a quick drain and possibly a hard start.

Hope this helps.

Yes, have a heavy duty pushbutton to activate glows -

With the fast glow system upgrade you do not re-attache original ground to temp sender per instructions

Meaning weak crimps? This could be - tempted to solder everything!

I believe Larry thinks you still have the loop plugs. I don't think you do. I believe you swapped out the loop plugs for pencil plugs.

It's possible the glowplug solenoid is sticking on intermittently.

You mean the heavy duty pusbutton activates the relay, RIGHT?

Yes, I was under the impression that he had loop type. If pin type, plugs wire in parallel to output of relay. Heavy wire from battery hot to other secondary side of relay through heavy fuse. One side of button to fused hot. Other side of button to pick the relay.

Hope this helps.
