I will be driving through Porterville next Thursday, and would like to check it out. I am not in a position to purchase it now, but would look at it personally and report back my experience. I have a feeling I might like it more than I should....Rich

I have asked for better pics, but the car is really excellent. It hasn't ever been in a parking lot since it was painted...

I had to chuckle at this...

A few months ago, before we moved, I thought about selling the 1978 300SD just to keep from moving it. I advertised it for $2,500.00 for a quick sale, quite literally, just to get rid of it.

Everyone kept saying, "Well, you know, the wood is cracked in a few places and the dash has cracks, so we will offer you $1,500.00"

I just laughed that off and told my wife we will just keep it.

I would be more interested in a car that can (as this one has done) commute 1,200 miles a week for over a year without a roadside failure as opposed to a few strips of wood, but that's just me I guess...

Agreed. A few pieces of wood would not be a deal breaker to me.

Some people are just professional chiselers. They know minor cosmetics don't really affect the value of these old cars but can't resist making the low ball offer.

I'm glad to hear they sold it and got some good money, too. The market must be stronger in that area but I was not far off with $4K. The wood thing is subjective and depends on the buyer. To me, $4K is a lot to spend on a 30 year old car, so I look for the details as well as the big picture. When it comes down to it, I will let the little things go.

Everything in California's Central Valley is priced low, so it isn't the market, because the economy has destroyed that region more than others. It is simply the amount of work put into the car and how perfectly everything fits and works.

You really had to see the car to believe the amount of work and attention to detail that went into it.

Example: The rear main seal had a slight, periodic drip, and rather than just clean the area and sell the car anyways, Dad pulled the engine to replace the rear seal, just so he could feel good about selling it. He found a single broken strand group in the weave of the seal's lower half that he missed on assembly.

Keep in mind, it was built by the same crew that builds things like this....Quality control is second to none.
