The day has finally come.

Tomorrow I start on my dream venture, a 300hp 87 300D. New #22 head, 7.5mm pump, new twin scroll hx30w (I am already convinced this is too small), 9" clutch, poly urethane rear transmount.... Hoping all goes moderately well...

Simpler=Better 11-18-2012 11:03 PM

It's about time!

vstech 11-19-2012 12:12 AM

mmm pictures aplenty i hope!

suginami 11-19-2012 12:13 PM

I'm not a diesel head, but I'm going to subscribe to this just for the stories. :D

ngarover 11-19-2012 01:36 PM

This is going to be cool...

I just gave a glancing look to my 87 300D... Oh to have the money...

Air&Road 11-19-2012 01:47 PM

So, are you going to turn it up to the point of a black cloud behind? If so, it'll go too fast. You'll get the black cloud out of sight of the traffic behind you too fast.:D

Who built your pump?

Please post pictures of your intercooler setup, I'd like to add a front mount to my car but retain my AC.

Dieselmeken was nice enough give me a 7.5mm pump for free, he has made a number of sales off my site. There are a number of other good vendors out there, including pasi with tomniks elements and myna of course.

No plans for intercooler yet. I plan on taking it easy until I have time (and money). I have a feeling a bigger turbo is needed and I will pick and IC at that time. In the meantime, eagle eye on the EGT.

My pin pulled did not show up today, so I used a 6mm bolt and a variety of sockets and washers to pull them both out. If you go this route make DAMN sure you are well seated in the ping. My tap and die kit got a workout today.

shadetree77 11-19-2012 09:55 PM

swing by my house if you're going up I24 with that beast

auspumpen 11-19-2012 10:14 PM

I strongly recommend you include an IC or other intake heat mitigation strategy at the same time as you radically increase fueling. It's really bad juju otherwise.

Silber Adler 11-19-2012 10:44 PM

Wow! What a 60' time with that green car must have. My Mercedes is envious.

Its in the works.....

winmutt 11-20-2012 02:49 PM

I completely noobed myself today and broke off the pin on the cam shaft trying to reassemble it. Luckily, I had a spare!

I speak from experience. I used to flip the propane switch under loaded boost and watch the EGTs jump, just like [snap!] right now. That was with a medium sized IC. Without any mitigation strategy in place, you're playing Russian roulette. Just not worth the risk.

winmutt 11-20-2012 04:18 PM

Im not questioning your experience, my wife is questioning the hole in my pants pocket.

But she married you this way. She can't complain. It's a pre-existing condition. :D

Had hoped to get the car running with old IP but new turbo and head today. Ran into a slight snag with the turbo, apparently not all HX30W are created equal. The new one is a twin scroll and has a bigger exhaust housing and the wastegate arm sits out further. I should have that fixed tomorrow before turkey time. I have about 22 or so pics I took that I will post with some details later. For now you can see them here. https://picasaweb.google.com/110184791268815842578/OffWithHerHead?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Sadly its not nearly as many as I thought I had taken....

vstech 11-21-2012 09:43 PM

WAAAAHHH! more pics more pics!!!

winmutt 11-22-2012 11:59 AM

After turning the engine by hand a million times, I turned her over till the battery died (building up oil pressure). Charging now until turkey time is over.

winmutt 11-22-2012 12:05 PM

Other than almost leaving paper towels in the engine, this is the only other noob mistake I made.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Sadly, I could only see the honing marks on 1 cyl (although 1 and 6 are up at tdc). The good side is that they were all mirror finish, no scoring!

vstech 11-22-2012 12:48 PM

aand, how big is the bruise on your forhead from the face slap?

WOW, you have a friend in FL with a 605? what's it in? pics? the 605 did not make it into any vehicles here in the US, so it's gotta be a grey market vehicle...
