Doing An Engine Swap And Got A Question (Flywheel)

Hello Experts!

I am installing a low mileage 240D engine that came with a manual 4 speed trans. I am pairing this engine with an auto trans. I have all the components that are needed for the job but was wondering about the flywheel that I have to use with the auto trans. My question is with regard to balance. If the flywheel is supposed to be balanced with the crank then how do I accomplish that or are flywheels balanced independently?

Also, I will have a manual trans and flywheel available once I am finished with this project. PM me if you may be interested in them.

Kevin

be sure and list the manual trans/flywheel in the parts for sale section of our forum.

some flywheels are neutrally balanced, some are not. clean really well around the crank mounting section, and look for two tiny marks. dots really... the alternative, is to mark the crank, and the manual flywheel, then take both the manual and the automatic flywheels to a machine shop to have them match balanced.

I wouldnt' think a flywheel from a 4-cylinder engine has anything other than neutral balance. The engine has perfect primary balance unlike it 5-cylinder counterpart.

I am under the impression that the factory service manual says they all need to be match balanced. Can anyone confirm or deny this please?

I have changed out five or six, some five cyl, some four and my 280e six. So far the 280 was the only one not neutrally balanced.

My experience has been a bit different than that of T-Wal; although the piston and rod assemblies are matched, the MB inline crankshafts are not neutral in themselves (the V8s are). As a consequence, weight is carried externally, both on the front hub for the torsional balancer, and on the flywheel. Hence the replacement flywheel, either manual or automatic, must be matched to the imbalance of the original.

My experience with swapping 616 engines has been,.. if nether the f/f or crank have witness marks they have been balanced independently. Following this in several swaps I have only seen one with witness marks where I had both crank and f/w balanced together.

The replacement flywheel

Is from a 300D non turbo. Please advise. The flywheel that I am NOT needing is coming from a 240D/manual trans.
