w126 spring compressor help

Hi folks,

I am trying to compress one of the front springs on my '84 300sd with a spring compressor I am renting from a member of this forum. I want to make sure I am using it correctly so I don't kill myself. I have the lower disk on the second lowest spring coil, and the upper on the second highest. I cranked down pretty far, but the spring didn't compress enough. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Jack

Crank until the coils touch.

I got the spring out, now I'm trying to remove the front bolt holding the guide rod in. It seems to be in there really tight. I'm hammering on the nut and it's not budging. Any suggestions?

How about reinstalling the spring? How do I get it to stay still in the right place (end of coil lined up with indentation in lower spring perch) while cranking on the spring compressor?

Thanks

You can use a jack under the arm to help hold the spring.

I usually just hold the spring while I undo the screw.
